How does the im2col layer work?

I am trying to implement locally connected layers (convolution without spatially tied weights) following Yangqing's idea, it can be done via the im2col layer. Little documentation is available for this layer. What parameters do I need to specify? Where do I find these type of "deprecated" layers that are not detailed in caffe.proto? Thank you!
