Has anyone done a repower on a 38 with the under sink location? I'm looking at either a Beta 45 or Yanmar 4jh45. Has anyone installed either of these engines? If so, how was the fit. Is there any helpful information you could pass on regarding the old engine removal/new engine install process?

Hi Dave,
I own a 38 XL #180. I am curious as to which engine model that you have now.

Dave,
I have a Yanmar 56hp in my XL model so I don't think that you'll have an issue fit wise with the 45 hp engine. They did have to install an Aqua drive unit, which I like a lot, since the foot print of the engine was different than previous models. I'd still get the specs for the overall engine dimensions just in case there were any recent design changes. Sorry I can't offer any removal/installation advice since I haven't had to do a rebuild yet. Good luck with it.

Thanks Nick. Did you have any issues removing the sink/counter piece? It looks like we should be able to remove the fasteners around the perimeter flange, but I'm unclear as to whether the toot rip has to be popped off first. Did you have any trouble with disassembly?

Dave,
I've never had to re-power so I can't offer any advice. My engine was installed at the factory. The issue I believe they had was that the footprint of the 56hp was different than previous engines installed in the 38's.

To my understanding the galley sink and surrounding joinery can be removed to get the engine out. I think it's easier said than done. I'd think removing the transmission, alternator etc. prior to engine removal would make the job easier. I've thought of even removing the head just to make the engine a little less bulky and cumbersome. I don't know if anyone on the sight with an XL model has removed their engine yet. Please take some pictures when you remove yours as many of the XL owners would greatly benefit from them.

Nick,

Are you considering repowering? How many hours do you have on your Yanmar 4JH? Mine's over 3000 hours and still running fine.

The engine in my CR42 is also under the galley. You can remove the entire corian galley top, sinks and all, and then lift the engine out.

Thierry,

I'm not planning to repower yet, just thinking ahead. Having helped a few friends work on their engines has me thinking about removing mine when the time comes. I can see where the Corian counter top and sink come out but, it looks as though the woodwork below the sink needs to be removed as well. That appears to be one of the problems because of the way the underlying plywood has been installed. Just removing the sink and surrounding countertop doesn't
seem like it would give enough room to lift the engine out. The Cabo Rico owner's book seems to have left out the step by step engine removal guide!

I have 2,300 hours on mine and it runs great so for now I'm not to concerned.
