After 6 boats and 50 years of sailing and cruising I should really know better, but I'm considering the purchase of a "84 CR 38 project boat ( we all what that means).  Boat is sound, but the victim of years of neglect requiring more than just a face lift. Does not appear to be a real deep money pit, but needs significant work. Presently putting together a bucket list and budget estimate. There is no documentation with the boat. I tried the current CR Website, but they can't help with Owners Manual, wiring and plumbing diagrams, etc. Anybody out there  have an 80's 38 and the original documentation? I'd be happy to pay copying and mailing costs. No problem with the Perkins 4.108- I've done them before.

Call me old fashioned, but I like things Bristol Fashion. Has anyone done a Awlgrip/Imron refinish on a 38 ? Trying to put a estimated cost on that finishing touch.Ditto, I'm concerned about condition of the 33 year old standing rigging - salt water boat.  Any experience/ opinions or suggestions are welcome.

Any and all opinions, tips, horror stories would be greatly appreciated. IF I jump in the boat will be limited to coastal cruising Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks in advance.

Jack,
I just sold my 1984 CR 38. Hull # 89.
Unfortunately all manuals and drawings went with the boat. I would be glad to help with any questions you have if I can.  I will see if I have copies of anything.

Hi Jack, welcome! I have CR 34 documentation posted online at the link below. Not exactly what you're looking for, but in a pinch might prove handy if you're unable to find what you need elsewhere.

Good luck and keep us all posted on your progress!

Since you directly asked for advice I will go ahead and give a direct answer.

1) I think you are crazy :)
2) Please deposit your cash directly into my bank account, it'll save you money.
3) Don't worry about the wiring and the plumbing... rip it all out and start over. By modern standards they are inadequate. Again, this will probably end up saving money in the long term.
4) You can save bundles of money on the plumbing by using PVC pipe, like in your home. This is actually a preferred ABYC standard, if done correctly. Used most often in commercial vessels.

My 2 cents.

How much are you paying for it?, Does it still have the wood deck? I Have been rehabbing a 1979 Cabo since I bought it 25 years ago. I have a 20 minute rule. No matter what the projec,t other than when I pull the boat, I have to be able to move out on the weekend and sail within 20 minuets. If you can't do this, it gets real old. As far as I know there were no diagrams with the older Cabos. Do whatever you have to do to get it sailing and go from there. Check all the rigging ends to make sure the cotter pins are in and sail it. IMHO

I did the hull with two part Interlux, sprayed on two coats primer and two coats white paint. Came out good for an armature. It's all in the prep work. Wipe it down with a degreaser a few times before you start to sand.

Jack,
I posted our manuals that came with the boat on the Facebook Cabo Rico group.  They are listed under the files.  I will attempt to attach here, and if that does not work, check out the facebook group for the files.

Just out of curiosity, is the boat located in Tarpon Springs?

MANY THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND ADVICE FROM SO MANY OF YOU.  Really quite impressive. CR owners are obviously very involved and truly friendly. Then again, one owner (who shall remain unnamed)  offered the opinion that this group approaches cult status. Reminds me of New England where a large group of cultists find pleasure in "Frost Biting" i.e. racing in 8' dinghy's starting on New Years Day regardless of temperature and  sea conditions. The season continues until the bay is completely free of ice.

UPDATE:  Since my earlier post I've done a more complete inspection and a very brief sea trial - the main sheet parted on the first reach- and found numerous defects that convinced me that I really don't want or need a handy mans special.Cockpit sole is mushy, Edson pedestal can be rocked back and forth with one hand, alarming sounds from engine/transmission/ stuffing box, several hollow sounding spots on deck, inoperative electrical circuits, broken/inoperative hardware etc. etc. One group member had replied to my post offering the opinion that I was "crazy". While I technically disagree with that diagnosis I freely admit that I ( and likely other members of this group as well) suffer from OBO with CI ( Obsessive Boat Ownership with Chronic Insolvency) , but I'm not yet ready to be dry docked and broken up for scrap. Short of buying a Grand Banks trawler, fixing the AC and taking up weekend residency there is no known cure for my/our condition. The good news is that while hanging around the docks I came across a 1980 CR 38 in good condition (??) . I'm meeting the owner over the weekend.

A few answers to specific questions that were asked:
  • The derelict is moored at Kemah Tx south of Houston
  • Asking price is $25K
  • Boat has no name or hail-port. I never could find a Hull #
Again, I really appreciate your help. At least now I'll have a better idea of what to look for on the next one.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Jack, I have to admit you are a good fiction writer, almost convinced me of the veracity of your post. Now, out of respect to the members of this group I need to clarify certain things by stating facts:
A few weeks ago we met at the building where we both live, I mentioned to you I was about to buy a Sailboat, you got interested and asked me to see it, so we went to Kemah where the boat was, you seemed to have had a good impression of the boat regardless of the fact that it was not clean, you did not inspect the boat given your hip problem that make it hard and painful for you to move around a boat.
After a few days you called me and started talking about Cabo Rico boats as if you knew them very well while at the same time trying to impress me about your abilities as a Boat Manager; I made it clear to you that I was going to enjoy the project myself, you know I am  partly retired engineer and with a lot of love for boats and maritime life style,You did not seem very happy about that.
Today I was searching the web trying to find documentation on the boat and to my surprise I found this forum and your posts:
Here my comments, unless you were talking about a different Cabo Rico boat in Kemah, Texas:
You are not looking to buy a project boat
You have not inspected my Cabo Rico 38 boat (I have already bought it and feel extremely happy about it, it was a great deal).
You have not found any conditions that would allow you to made the comments you made, you could only sit for a while and look at it.
And most important, you could have not made a sea trial on the boat, the sails are well preserved and stored in my house.

I thank all members that have tried to help Jack with good will and supportiveness. My respect and consideration to you all...
The boat is being cleaned, the wood is looking extremely nice after good treatment and care, the engine is running (to my surprise at the first crank). The previous owner, a very respectable 80 year old gentleman and a very energetic and healthy one decided to sale it because his wife cannot sail the boat anymore (they are going to buy a troller).

Jack, keep up the good writing but PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, make it clear to all readers that they are fictional because somebody could see them as delusional.
