I know the topic has been raised before but I cannot find the info I need. My prop is apparently beyond repair. I need a new one. Suggestions on diameter and pitch for a 3 blade mated to a westerbeke 46 ? The prop shop says the info on the old one cannot be read.

I seem to remember going to a site that would give you a recommendation. Power boat or sailboat. But I can't remember where. Someone that made props. Are you going to get a feathering prop like Max Prop, or a fixed prop.

https://www.miwheel.com/propellers/brands/michigan-propellers/ HERE it is. Good luck.If not using a 3 blade feathering, I would go with a two blade, much better for sailing. A three blade slows you down a bunch and spins all the time you are sailing. If you mostly use the boat as a motor yacht, use the three blade, but use a brake on the shaft when sailing. Have you been using a three blade??

I find it strange a prop shop cannot measure the diameter and pitch on a propeller.  Isn't the diameter measured from tip to tip and the pitch the theoretical distance the propeller would move in one revolution?

Ron,

I have a three blade fixed prop which is an 18 R 11. I have a Yanmar 56 HP in my 38'. I don't know if this will help you any.

Good Luck,

Nick

Thanks much for this. It came with a three blade. I am just wary of incorrect pitch re motor rpm

That's my feeling too. Makes me want to use a different shop.

Ron,

When I got my boat delivered we had to re-pitch the prop once to get optimal performance out off it at the right rpms.

I agree with John in that the prop shop you're using should be able to easily figure out the right size prop and pitch. I suspect they won't be splitting atoms in their basement on the weekends in the near future.

I use a prop shop in Georgia that most of the boat yards in a few hundred mile radius send their work to. When they recondition a prop they give you a before and after computer graph printout that gives numerous specs on each blade in comparison to the others. If your shop is not doing that it's even more reason to get rid of them.
It's not a big deal to re-pitch a fixed blade prop correctly, if the shop knows what their doing.

I just replaced my prop due to electrolysis. It was a three blade, 18x11 RH on a Westerbeke 46 engine.

Perfect thanks so much. Can you tell me where you got it and what you paid and also what is your top RPM all out?
