I need a track gate. Can anyone tell me the maker of my mast? Sources for a track gate?

Try Charleston Spar, sparcraft-us.com. I believe they did my mast.

I think some may have Selden masts as well.

I have found every spar part I have ever needed for our 34 at rigrite.

Cheers

We have an Isomat mast and like Dave, we have had good luck with Rig-Right. If you look up masts, they list the correct size of the masts for the CR 34 and the 38. We had good luck with parts from them when we added a whisker pole on the front of the mast.

Best,

I  want to mount my wiser pole on my mast. How did you do it and how much does it cost.

The mast gate is nothing but a bent piece of aluminum stock. You can do it in an hour or less I bet. Get a small piece from the hardware store, cut it to the right size using a jigsaw, bend over a pipe, and drill/tap a machine screw hole. Done.

This is for Leslie or anyone else who has a whisker pole on their CR34.

We want to add one on Cigano and are wondering about the preferred dimensions (collapsed and extended), diameter, etc. based on some actual sailing experience.
Hoping we can do a setup that will store vertically against the mast. To keep weight to a minimum, I plan to snoop around for a used carbon fiber pole, maybe few and far between, or maybe not, with all the recent storm-wrecked boats.

Any words of wisdom, recommendations, cautions, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

Hi there Dave. Here is what we did. I am posting pictures of our extending pole which is Forespar #402200 that is a line control pole. It is 12 to 22 with UXP (trigger) ends. We have a ring that slides on our mast. A rigger ran a halyard inside the mast that controls sliding the ring (and the inboard end of the pole) up and down.
We have a rubber pole support to ensure the pole does not make noise against the mast. And finally there is a bail attached at the bottom of the mast that lets me latch the lower and outboard end of the pole when it is not in use.

Hi Leslie,

Are you satisfied with the performance, dimensions, weight of your w-pole?
Should it be longer, shorter, different diameter, etc?
Do you employ an uphaul/downhaul arrangement like a spinnaker or just let its end float on the genny sheet?

Many thanks
Dave

Hi Leslie, Dave-

Reading Forespar's guidelines, boat's up to 35' call for the 13-24 pole for genoa work, and 12-22 pole for working jib. Granted, the CR34 is less than 35, but not with the bowsprit and genoa mounted forward on that. Leslie, do you think the 12-22 is plenty sufficient for a CR34 genoa (fully expecting Forespar's guidelines may be a bit liberal)? I'm paying close attention here, as I plan to implement a similar set-up. Thanks for sharing!!

Dave, we only deploy when we feel we will travel a fairly lengthy distance down wind. The Chesapeake may not give us the greatest opportunity for that.

We have the pole supported by our staysail’s halyard as well as the genie sheet. That ensures that I never deal with the weight of the pole, not that it is that heavy. But that said, I am the one to usually work the fore deck and being closer to 70, I am looking for something I can deal with and not have a problem.

Clayton can then unfurl the gennie more or less to give us the best performance.

I think the length of the pole seems good. Remember my pole is extendable so the setting is made on the fly.

The rigger who set this up did move the topping lift for the staysail to a block on the ring that is high up on our mast. The pole halyard runs inside the mast and a new opening and shive were installed to facilitate the line that moves the slider ring (bail) that runs up the face of our Isomat mast. We did not do this ourselves.

I think this was a good upgrade and worth the investment. The 34 is not a large vessel. I would not want to clutter my deck or my lifelines with a whisker pole when it is not in use. The rubber rest on the mast keeps it from moving on the mast and making noise. It has been good for us.

Let us know what you do moving forward.

Best,

Leslie

Yes John, the pole seems fine for us. The pole frequently comes back to rest on the forward shroud. I am sure you have seen what I sent Dave. Good luck.

John, we never fully extend our 12-22 pole. If you feel the longer pole will be better for your  gennie and your style of sailing then certainly go for the larger pole. If you are questioning, maybe borrow a longer pole from a dock neighbor and extend it at the dock and see if it seems better for you.

Our main goal was to prevent our gennie from collapsing in down wind travel. What we have does this.

Best,

Leslie

Leslie,

Many thanks for all the info and details — greatly appreciated. I expect we’ll be going with a setup very similar to yours.

Cheers

You are most welcome, Dave. I hope it is a good set up for you. Are you going to be heading down the east coast one of these years. I would love to meet you sometime and see your lovely vessel.

Best,

Leslie

Hey Leslie, more east coast sailing is very enticing to us, Bahamas too. After my wife Janet’s retirement this winter, our immediate goal is to spend a summer of extended-cruising on Lake Superior, which after 30+ years here, we still have many dozens of remote anchorages and gunkholes to visit and explore. We’ll see what happens after that. We’ll look you up if we’re near, boat trip or road trip.

We have a good friend in his ninth year after sailing out of our marina, currently zig-zagging back and forth between the South Pacific and NZ. I am greatly intrigued by New Caledonia — maybe we can talk him into heading there soon and join him. Sheesh - so many places, so many possibilities. Time will be on our side for once.

Cheers
Dave

Dave,

Sounds so nice to be in that position. Elise (the granddaughter ) just started 8th grade. Long haul yet.

Safe travels to you and Leslie.

Sounds amazing Dave. I would just be happy to try for the Bahamas and enjoy that gin clear water. It sounds like Ron and Phebe Applegate enjoy their time cruising the winter months in the Bahamas and take to the roads in their RV for the summer. That sounds like the perfect mix.

Do let us know when you head south.

Best,

Leslie
