It is now my turn to have a busted Jabsco 34600 bilge pump. The outlet pipe broke right off, exactly as depicted in Thierry's photo from this 2012 thread:

Thierry (or anyone for that matter): How did you end up resolving your bilge pump problems? If you went with a different pump, which one, and how has it been working for you the past 6 years?

The Jabsco 34600 is rated at 10.8 gallons per hour. I'm having difficulty locating a remote bilge pump with a similar flow rate. The Whale Gulper 320 is rated half that, and some Whale pumps (notably the SuperSub) have abysmal reviews on Amazon. Rheinstrom seems to have interesting options though they're CRAZY expensive.

Thanks all,

Chuck

We had the same problem about ten years ago — the metal tube corroded and sheared off clean.

A call to Jabsco revealed that they do not sell these very inexpensive brass tubes, but they have the entire base assembly available which costs $200+. The Jabsco rep could not explain why the tubes weren't available. I made my own tubes out of thin-wall PVC and fit, siliconed, and fastened them with stainless steel machine screws tapped into the bottom of the base. Also rebuilt the rest of the pump. So far so good.

Cheers
Dave

Chuck,

I replaced the Jabsco pump with a Whale Gulper 320. It has a capacity of 4 gallons per minute. Much less than the original Jabsco, but sufficient to pump the bilge dry with the little water that I get in there through the mast, or from a drip from the stuffing box. The secondary pump is a Rule 3700.

Thank you Dave and Thierry -- very helpful. I'm considering both options, the PVC fix as well as replacement.

Thierry, how did you install the secondary pump? In the CR34, it's pretty tight back there in the aft part of the bilge. Were you able to install the Rule without removing the prop shaft?

Chuck,

The bilge on my CR42 is narrow and deep, but it is wide enough to hold a Rule pump.

Just bought a Jabsco 36600 Diaphragm Bilge Pump for my CR 38, which has a bilge that is deep and narrow, so I figured direct replacement of the original, which is obsolete. Pricey, but New Wind is worth it....

Thank you Stephen. The in/out port size on the 36600 is smaller, did you run new hoses too?

Thierry, did you poke a new hole in the hull for your secondary pump?

Chuck,

No, the secondary pump was installed at the factory.

I use the smallest auto magic pump I can find to get small amounts of water out. I hard plumb just past the back siphon valve and put a coupling the I can take apart to pull the pump up for cleaning or replacing. I have a large diaphragm pump mounted up high if more than a foot of water gets in the bilge. And a manual pump. Next time I pull the boat and shaft I will install a high power 110 volt a.c sump pump.
