Hi there to all.  My girlfriend and I bought a 1979 Cabo Rico 38 about a year ago (September) that we looked at for 2 years prior.  The boat was acquired by the previous owner under a mechanic's lean, I think.  At any rate, I think for some reason the hull ID number had to be changed.  Is there somewhere in the boat I can locate the hull number?  Being a 1979, what is a possible hull number range?  Appreciate any help...I will have some future questions, posts, and experiences to share in the future.  We have truly enjoyed the boat over the past year.  We're in the Patuxent River off of the mid-Chesapeake Bay.

Hi Joe,
I don't know about 1979 Cabo Ricos, but later models have the Hull Identification Number in two places. One is in the obvious location, at the top starboard corner on the transom. The second, hidden, location is often inside under the port side deck, above the stove. If there is a metal shield to protect it from the heat of the stove, it is likely under there.

Good luck,
Thierry

Hull numbers can't change. The outside location is on the starboard side of the stern, at deck height.  Don't know the inside location. I have #19, also built in 1979. My hin is fthc0019-02-79. The 19th boat, built in February of 1979.

The hull number registered with the state of Maryland was in fact changed by the Department of Natural Resources.  I'm curious which hull number the boat is from the factory.  Curious as well if the ballast is lead or cast iron...

i was under the impression it was against federal law to change the hull number, just like a VIN cannot be changed on a car. it is literally carved into the fiberglass on most boats.

Hi Joe,

Welcome to the group.  I don't understand why the State would (or even could) change the hull ID.
A late 70's CR38 will almost certainly have iron ballast.  It does not seem to be a problem with Cabo Ricos however.  I know that many "experts"  recommend against an encapsulated iron ballast, however I don't think the reasoning for their warnings  would apply to the CR's.  As I understand it, the ballast is made up of solid iron castings placed in the keel cavity and a resin slurry is poured in to completely encapsulate them.  Then a very thick schedule of glass is laid over this as a ballast cap.  The likelihood of water intrusion and the resultant rust is pretty low.   This is different from most encapsulated iron ballast boats (generally some lower quality Taiwan boats).  There, the ballast may be made up of any scrap iron the builder may find.  It's often not encapsulated well and water finds it's way in where the scrap iron rusts, expands, and causes hull damage.  I've heard of a boat where the builder had filled the keel with Pachinko balls.  After a very hard grounding the keel needed repair and when the repairman began grinding the keel, the balls "spilled out" all over the yard.  I understand it was a real challenge "refilling" the keel.   My belief is that CR's were generally built to a higher standard than many of her Taiwanese contemporaries.

The hull number on my jet ski was changed too. Typo, it happens, it's fixed now. Anyway what number do you have. All 38 should have the same first 4 letters. Anyone know what they stand for?

My first four or three letters are fta or something like that. I think it is from the old fibro-technica yard?

Btw, the 5inch large numbers may be uscg documentation numbers, not hull.

Yes the 5 inch numbers are your documentation number. You can go to the US CG Web site and check them. If the boat was documented they will have your HIN.

The factory serial number should be stamped into the fibreglass on the stern, starboard side of the Cabo.

The plate on my 77 is on the stern on the starboard side just under the cap rail and it is riveted to the fiberglass hull.  Mine reflects October of 1977 and is hull #2

It looks like  the c0019 is the serial number, newer boats should have a mic of CQB, older boats the FTA or FTH.?

Okay, I spoke to Maryland DNR and have an answer.  My number was changed because it is no longer showing on the transom AND it must be 12 digits in Maryland.  DNR told me the original number was FSAV0130778.  Would this be hull number 13?
