Hello,
I can relate with what you are going through. Often I felt less
adept and like I was struggling to learn new things all the time.
Just felt like I didn't have 'the spark', so to speak. Mnemonics were
one the first things I started with. I still use them but I feel they
are most useful as an aid to an already sharp mind. Nonetheless, I
use the associative techniques to learn new stuff all the time, so I
wouldn't give up the time I spent with them. At some point along my
journey, I did Harry Kahne it helped--it can be very grueling, but as
you improve, you will notice changes in your thinking clarity.
For the Kahne techniques, I recommend using a notebook to track your
progress. Use a stopwatch and record the time it takes to get done
with a line. After you break a certain time goal with the chosen
words, pick new ones. Increase the number and length of the words as
you progress.
I am currently finding overlapping benefits using Stroop-Task, Logical
comparisons, and DNB. It appears the benefits of Stroop and Logical-
Comparison move more in direction of DNB than the other way around.
What I mean is that after I get 'in the zone' lately in either game
(Stroop or LC), like after I achieve a few personal high-scores in a
row for instance, and then I take that focus into DNB, my score on DNB
will increase. Its been happening lately. For instance, yesterday I
hit a high on logical-comparisons (for me 56 with maybe one or two
errors max) then went to DNB and right off the bat got a 70% on Dual-7-
Back. For me it is a significant improvement because I've have
plateaued in the 60 percents for what seems a good fair amount of
time.
The same thing happened to me when I was moving up the leader board
on improveyourattention. Been using the phone app for a couple of
weeks new and at first I felt like I wasn't going to crack 100 for a
very long time, but I was slowly making progress, then all of a sudden
I moved up three spots and into 26th place in the same. I went over
to this multitask game (
http://armorgames.com/play/11152/multitask-2)
and on my first try unlocked the first level after unsuccessfully
several times over the course of a few days. My overall take on it
is that there is a sweet spot or "zone" for concentration that applies
to many areas. I am finding myself in that zone a little more often
after using these games. I definitely recommend adding them
somewhere. They are fun on their own even if it weren't also helping
your brain too!
Just a quick note on the Stroop-task i use. For a while I was using
cognitivefun.net, but I am finding the free iphone app called,
'ImproveYour Attention' by Movisol to be a little more challenging
(due to the added interference compared to
cognitivefun.net) and more
fun because there's a world leader board.
