Virtualization type 'hvm' is required for instances of type 'r3.4xlarge'

Can anyone offer a solution? I upgraded to boto 2.27.

I am using an AMI that I use to run on m2.4xlarge.

You’ll have to switch to a HVM AMI. This doesn’t have anything to do with boto.
