Milkdrop - no lights!

So I have a Windows 7, Kodi, Boblight, Arduino DIY WS2812B setup which works fine for movies, TV shows, etc - but not for Milkdrop. I'm guessing this is to do with the fact that MIlkdrop is OPenGL and rendering videos isn't (I could be making that up) - but I wondered if there was a way to get this to work? Googling doesn't really show much, and I can't really find any other threads on people asking the same question which makes me wonder if I'm just missing something fundamental.
