Is anyone else having trouble getting BitCurator to recognize media in optical drives?  Backstory: a few weeks ago the last version was fine with optical disks but wouldn't work with the USB floppy drive we have.  The updated version is fine with the USB floppy drive but doesn't see the built-in optical drives or the USB optical drive I've tried.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Hi Ann,

I'm able to mount a range of CD-ROMs via the Safe Mount menu, both internal and USB-drive based, in my test systems with a clean 0.8.4 VM. Could you provide some additional detail on the process you're using to mount the CD-ROM?

(Note that the CD-ROM icon will not appear "automatically" in the Unity bar on the left - it must be mounted via the Safe Mount menu - a future release will address this).

Hi Kam,

I tried to mount a CD using Safe Mount, but it told me that the device was busy.  I also opened Guymager but it did not see the built-in or USB optical drives, so I can't use it to image the media. These are the same behaviors that I saw when I last posted.  Does this information make the problem clearer?  I can be more precise if you let me know what kind of information you need.  Thanks for your help!

Best,
Ann

Your host machine is probably not allowing the VM to capture the device. There are a number of reasons this can be happening, but generally right-clicking on the Oracle VM VirtualBox icon and ensuring that you're using "Run as administrator..." to start the VM solves this (alternatively: ensure you're logging into your host machine using an account that has full administrative privileges).

It's also possible your VirtualBox install may be damaged or out of date. You could try reinstalling the current version (4.3.10) and the extension pack.

I'm afraid I'm still unable to replicate this issue on our Windows or Macintosh hosts here, but I'll keep testing...

Thanks for the ideas, Kam.  I will try re-installing the VM.  I do start VirtualBox with "run as administrator," so I don't think that's the problem.  Getting full administrative privileges on the host machine probably will not be possible, though, unfortunately.
