Hi all,

I'm attempting to image a collection of removable media, including HFS formatted 3.5" DD floppy disks. My understanding (backed by sampling) is that contemporary USB floppy drives cannot read these. Can anyone confirm whether an older, non-USB 3.5" floppy drive connected via a Kryoflux floppy controller would be able to read them? Or are there contemporary USB drives that can read them?

Many thanks

Hi Lachian,
Yes, you are correct, USB floppy drives cannot read HFS 3.5" DD floppies. The Kryoflux connected to an internal 3.5" floppy drive is perhaps the most common way of reading them in this community. Here's a link to a very detailed analysis of the Kryoflux specifically reading HFS floppy disks that you might find useful. http://goughlui.com/2013/04/21/project-kryoflux-part-1-the-board-and-associated-hardware/

Best,
Porter
