From reading the BitCurator user guide and my previous use of BitCurator on a pc using virtual machine I do not believe it is possible to put a cd or dvd into the computer's built-in cd/dvd drive and mount this media within the BitCurator environment.  Another way of putting this is that I believe BitCurator will only let you mount media via usb drive.  Is this correct?

I am about to inherit a bunch of cds containing pictures and dvds and blurays containing videos from our university's Marketing department and am trying to determine the best way to copy this content off the media while ensuring that no unintended changes are made to the files.  If I cannot use BitCurator in read-only mode for the reason described above, do others have suggestions for programs to use?  Attaching a write-blocker to the machine is my first plan of attack.

Thanks,

Hi Alston,
BitCurator running in a VM should mount CDs and DVDs without too much trouble. Just make sure the BitCurator VM is up and running before you insert the disk. The VirtualBox drivers will detect the disk and then hand it off to the VM. There's a small disk icon in the bottom right of the screen that will light up once the disk is recognized by the VM.

Regarding other imaging tool, FTK Imager is a popular option for Windows users. Also keep in mind that CDs and DVDs are read only (Read Only Memory, ROM), so you don't need additional write blocking. (If they're writable or re-writable disks it is possible to write to them, but you would have to actively and deliberately do so.)

Best,
Porter
