Here's some images of the Seiko SMI 3200 Scanning Electron Microscope that is in need of a new home:

Note that this is NOT a small system! It's not huge as SEM's go, but definitely not desktop - more like "small room sized". And it would obviously need some dedicated person to keep it in good running condition. It is however almost brand new, and currently *running*, at <5nm resolution!

Beam Services Inc is down in Pleasanton, so I guess interested parties could potentially go and have a look at the system. This kind of equipment would be a significant commitment and investment in time and effort on our part, so let's coordinate on this shall we?

Note that the post is discussing a 'FIB single beam system', not an
electron microscope. This would be useful for destructive (as the beam
is gallium contaminating and will ballistically mill the sample with
each scan) imaging, and very useful for micro and nano fabrication.
Think special cell holder and injector syringe tips,
micro/nanofluidics, MEMS, making lithography masks, performing x-ray
analysis (via PIXE -- particle induced xray emission). This is a
scanning Focused Ion Beam... not an electron beam or a dual
electron+FIB machine.

DOH! Thank Nathan - that would be a huge difference. I got fooled by the fact that the several listings on caeonline.com all call it a FIB SEM system:

http://www.caeonline.com/listing/product/9095358/seiko-smi-3200
http://www.caeonline.com/listing/product/67711/seiko-smi-3200
http://www.caeonline.com/listing/product/9025735/seiko-smi-3200

Don't these things usually allow some secondary electron imaging as well though?

If it doesn't have any imaging capabilities, I doubt that we would want this beast. Would be good to check this with the owner though...

Yes, the imaging electronics is the same as a scanning electron
microscope, the beam scan electronics probably a bit different but
mostly the same ideas (using electrical or magnetic fields to scan the
beam).

Yep, I'm guessing this has imaging... it would be pretty hard to focus
to <5nm without some feedback to check edges for!

Also, here's a link to a 'quote' on a new source... I've heard how
much these usually cost before, but I can't remember exactly at the
moment. I think around $2-4k:
https://www.appliedbeams.com/product/gallium-lmis-refill-for-seiko-fib-systems/

Here's a good primer on FIB I just found when searching for the
average lifetime of the Gallium source:

Hm - "refurbished by refilling the reservoir with Gallium". That sounds like a DIY job if I ever heard one! I happen to have some Gallium sitting right here...

Well, we've already had a chance to get a free EM twice before. Things didn't quite work out those times, but I would not be surprised if we got another opportunity some time down the road. Maybe we'll be better prepared at that time.

For those who are really in need of some EM time, you might want to cultivate some contacts at the Molecular Foundry at Berkeley...

I for one would be super interested in this, especially for our plant cuticle/epidermis and chloroplast manipulations, and general curiosities of course. Pollen photography is also a thing.

$15k is bonkers but seems like the going rate. Wish there was a way you could just rent time to use one.

I also hear EMs are getting smaller and more affordable in general... Let's hope. If that's true then may be smart to wait it out.

I ended up buying this FIB on eBay for a steal after there were no
takers and it got relisted a few times... it took me 2 years to find
the time and courage to get it running, but in the end it was actually
quite smooth to get going. Getting it home was the biggest hurdle,
second was the gumption that I wouldn't kill the instrument, third was
connecting all the wires (nicely labelled actually) and vacuum hoses
(all pumps included), and finally just flipping the switch and
rebooting it a few times.

I can now etch and image nanoscale features! Soon to be put to use on
some DNA nanofluidics:
