I am a volunteer at Biocurious and also the moderator at Ned Nights, an informal discussion group at the SUB.  We have two of our own talking Sunday June 19th.

The SUB is a private space and its location is not listed on the web.  It is located a short walk from the 16th street BART station in the mission.

It is free and please rsvp if you plan to come.  If you have not been to the SUB, email us for directions.

Ned-X: Hacking Biology

Hello NEDsters!
Check out our Sunday June 19th @ 7pm talks:

Johan Sosa
DIY GMO
How new techniques are making it possible for anyone to cheaply and precisely modify the DNA of organisms.

Jo Bhakdi
How to detect cancer early:
A big data approach to genomic cancer diagnostics.

Jo Bhakdi is Founder of Quantgene, a Berkeley-based cancer diagnostics startup. Detecting cancer at early stages holds a great promise: by shifting the median detection from currently stage 3.5 to stage 2, we could reduce cancer mortality by 2/3 and save 400,000 American lives each year.

A wealth of sequencing data has opened new avenues to enable early cancer detection through simple blood samples. At Quantgene, we use a new big data approach that allows us to apply high-accuracy, low cost PCR to the problem. In this speech, I will explain what we did, what the next steps are and how early detection will fundamentally change cancer in the next 5 years.

When?
Talks will begin at 7:30pm sharp, so come at 7:00 to mingle and find a good seat. Please bring snacks, beverages, and fellow nerdels.

Where?
Our normal location, email: ned.i...@thesubsf.com if you don't know where that is.
