Hello everyone,

It looks like biochar.ca has been finally scuttled and closed.  We had quite an existence, having had our very first meeting of the original Canadian biochar Initiative (CBI) Steering Committee in December 2008 in Montreal (at McGill University), and subsequently having about fourteen (14) meetings of the original Board of Directors (until about March 2010), after which we re-established ourselves for a 2nd attempt (New CBI) around October 2011, which lasted until about August 2012.

Although we had kept the biochar.ca website active in the hopes that we might eventually resurrect the organization, it seems that biochar.ca is now (finally) gone and the (national) Canadian Biochar Initiative is truly no longer in existence... and is now but a figment of our memories.

But of course, on ward and upward we go!  Biochar Ontario still exists as a (somewhat) functional representative for the Biochar industry in Ontario, and there is certain activity in both Alberta and Quebec and probably also British Columbia and even in the Atlantic Provinces and in the rest of the Prairies as well (Sask and Manitoba).

Of course, without a functional 'National' organization anymore it is getting more and more difficult to figure out who is doing what in each Province, and so we have certainly become a much more 'siloed' country when it comes to knowing what is happening in each Province (I have only some "legacy" contacts from my time on the CBI Steering Committee, and certainly do not spend significant amounts of time trying to keep up-to-date on the various Regional activities outside of Ontario anymore, as I had done in years past).

 So where are we?

We might still be able to say that we have a "Canadian Biochar Industry" in some respects, and although it may be smaller than we had once expected it might be by this time (about eight [8] years after out first meeting), some people might also be surprized by the progress that has been made in this country.

But who actually knows?  We don't have a functional "Industry" or "Trade Association" right now to collect this kind of Industry information, nor do we have have anyone in government "tracking" what is actually happening in the nascent 'Industry' in Canada (as far as I can tell).  The IBI may have some information, but it is almost certain that they have only limited information, given that they have quite limited capabilities (staffing), and they need to "look after" (track) activities that are happening in the Entire World (including in places like the USA and Mexico, China, Europe, India, South America, Africa and Australia etc., where the biochar industry has apparently evolved ~ and continues to evolve ~ at a more rapid pace).

Thus, I have three [3] requests for the recipients of this email:

1. I would ask that you change your address book(s) to reflect the fact that lhel...@biochar.ca is no longer functional, and ask that you change your primary email address for me to: lhel...@biochar-consulting.ca

2. I would ask all former "members" (and supporters) of the original Canadian Biochar Initiative to please provide me with a quick update of their activities (if any) and/or their assessment of what is happening in their own (local / regional) "backyard" (area / Region / Municipality / Province) so that I can get some idea of what is happening in Canada at this point in time [a 'snapshot' of activity in early 2017].
(This information should be useful for our "archives".)**

3. Join our *new* Canadian Biochar Initiative (CBI) discussion group at:

https://groups.google.com/d/forum/canadian-biochar-initiative

email: canadian-bioc...@googlegroups.com

** Alternately, if you do not wish to send update information directly to me you may wish to join the CBI discussion group (above) and post an update or query or comment for other members to read.

note: This new CBI Google group can henceforth be our "archive" for Canadian biochar-related activities so that we have something to refer to when one day "historians" might wish to look back at what we have accomplished.

Lloyd,  cc Tom

I guess this may be a personal disappointment - but I hear very good things about biochar activity in Canada.

Tom has been very active in a new North American Biochar (Initiative?) group;   this subject came up a bit today in a (much more active) USBI board meeting. (and of course Tom can do a lot also through IBI).

So I’ll bet we hear more about Canadian biochar despite the closing here.

Ron

Ron,

Not to worry. We still have our "Canada East-West Team" working somewhat 'behind-the-scenes' trying to organize events and activities.**

** The East-West team (so far) includes myself (from Biochar Ontario), Don Harfield (from the Alberta Biochar Initiative), AirTerra Inc. (Alberta), Passive Remediation Systems Ltd. (PRSI, BC), British Columbia Biocarbon Ltd. and a representative from Chemists w/o Borders (Canada).

Hopefully soon we will also have some companies [producers] from Quebec, Ontario, Sask, Manitoba and the Atlantic Provinces -- and probably more from British Columbia and Alberta -- supporting the creation of a new Canadian Biochar "Trade Association" ~ which may possibly come to fruition at a meeting that is being planned for this spring in Alberta.

Next steps?  Possibly the resurrection of a pan-Canadian "Biochar Offset Protocol" (to be delivered under the new Federal Carbon Tax and Ontario Cap-and-Trade Program), possibly modeled on the Alberta Offset Protocol (originally developed by Prasino Group, Calgary).*
