Subject: Charlotte bicycle plan draft for review

All,

One of my first duties as the new bicycle program coordinator for the City of Charlotte was to update the city’s bicycle plan (last adopted in 2008).  Following on the heels of the Transportation Action Plan Update and Charlotte WALKS, Charlotte BIKES will refresh the city’s vision, goals, and strategies related to creating a bicycle-friendly city.

The content of this plan was developed with input from Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Bicycle Advisory Committee, as well as from input received at various public events.  It is also hopefully a reflection of the numerous community dialogues held in Charlotte over the last few years related to the topic of bicycling, and is organized around the 6 “E’s” of a bicycle-friendly community (Equity, Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation/Planning).

A draft of the Charlotte BIKES plan is now available for review, and input/feedback is welcome through an online survey format.  You are welcome to provide feedback, as well as share the following two links within your networks and to those you would want to review and comment on the city’s strategies towards bicycling.

I will be working with Charlotte City Council’s Transportation and Planning Committee on the review of this plan, and are targeting an adoption date by mid-2017.  Comments and feedback are requested back by then end of March.

Thank you for all you do to encourage bicycling in the Queen City,

Ben Miller, AICP
