Hi Everyone,

It's official: BigBlueButton 0.63 is released.

Here's the summary of what's updated in this release.  Thanks to everyone who contributed -- we couldn't have done it with out you!

A new BigBlueButton 0.63 VM is available for download from here.  Users of BigBlueButton 0.62 (VM or installed via packages on Ubuntu 9.04) can upgrade to BigBlueButton 0.63 with two commands.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you have been using the 0.62 VM as your development environment, we recommend downloading and starting with a fresh VM.

New Features

  • Localization Support - Another big contribution to this release is work done by Xie Yan Qing and Chen Guangtao from China, who made localization of the BBB Client possible.
  • Support for other file formats - Jean-Philippe Guiot, a contributor from France, submitted a patch months ago that allows uploading of different file formats for the presentation module. Now, we've finally integrated his work into BBB, so from version 0.63 you will be able to upload not only .pdf, but also .ppt, doc, txt, and other file formats!
  • Improved Presentation Module - The presentation module has been refactored to use the Mate Framework for Flex. It is now more robust, and has several new features, such as the ability for the viewers in a conference to see where the presenter is pointing his mouse of the current slide (the red dot!). The stability of the file upload and conversion process has also been improved.
  • VoIP stability - VoIP is now more stable, with fewer dropped calls than ever, and better voice quality. And no system-access fee either!
  • Distribution - You now longer need to compile a kernel module for VoIP. This means that you can now install BigBlueButton 0.63 on any Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit (server or desktop) with just five commands.
  • Updated Install instructions - If you want to install BigBlueButton's components, we've provided step-by-step instructions for Ubuntu 9.04CentOS 5.03, and Fedora 12.

Fixed Issues

Notes:

- The API is replacing our old login system for BigBlueButton.  If you download and setup your own BigBlueButton server, you can still access the old web interface through http://<your_bigbluebutton_IP>/bigbluebutton.

- As many of you know, BigBlueButton uses Asterisk for it's voice conferencing, which means you can bridge both VoIP calls (from within the client) and incoming phone calls into a voice bridge.  You can see this at http://demo.bigbluebutton.com/ server: login from the home page and you'll be given a phone number and extension that you can call to join the voice bridge.

- We're in process of updating the tutorial videos for BigBlueButton 0.63; they should be updated shortly.

Enjoy.

Regards,... Fred (and the rest of the BigBlueButton team!)

Hey ppl,

trying to install BBB from scratch inside a fresh created Ubuntu Jaunty domU guest (not the VM with the pre-installed BBB in it) :

When trying to fetch the apt-information it barfs with this output:

root@ubuntu:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# apt-get update
Hit http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty Release.gpg
Hit http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty Release
Hit http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

W: Failed to fetch http://archive.bigbluebutton.org/dists/bigbluebutton/Release  Unable to find expected entry  main/binary-amd64/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
This is the updated apt-source list:

root@ubuntu:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# cat bigbluebutton.list
deb http://archive.bigbluebutton.org/ bigbluebutton main

And this is the system's uname:

root@ubuntu:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# uname -a
Linux ubuntu.xxxx.yyyyy 2.6.26-2-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 5 04:27:12 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(where xxx.yyy is my domainname)

Reason: The Release file does not specify any amd-64 targets only "binary-i386" ; see http://archive.bigbluebutton.org/dists/bigbluebutton/Release

I tried to create a i386 domU guest (xm create --arch i386 etc....) but after installation of that brand new VM it gives another error:

root@ubuntu2:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# apt-get update
Hit http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty Release.gpg

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
bigbluebutton: Depends: bbb-config but it is not going to be installed
Depends: bbb-voice-conference but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
I'm really on Ubuntu 9.04 as can be seen from this output:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 9.04
Release:        9.04

Is that amd64 thing easy for you guys to fix ? Perhaps just a symlink and see what happens ?

Walter

Hi Walter,

Jeremy is right -- we currently only support BigBlueButton on Ubuntu
9.04 32-bit (server or client). So far, we've been focusing on
expanding the capabilities of BigBluebutton but yu can expect that
we'll be adding support (via packages) for other linux distributions
shortly.

For now, best stick with Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit and let us know if you
have any problems setting up your own server.

Unfortunately after a day of fiddling with xen, debian dom0's domU's ,
ubuntu domU's and 32 vs 64 bit fights the results are negative.

So far I can't run a 32 bit domU (guest) to run on my amd64 dom0.

What are the chances that 64 bit packages will be distributed soon (e.g.
within a month ?)

Tbh it's more common to see 64 bit dom0 hosts on dedicated servers in
datacenters since they easily support lots of memory etc (unless you put a
32 bit PAE kernel on it ofc).

Walter

Hi Walter,

Most of BigBlueButton (red5 + apps, tomcat6 + apps) is written in
Java, so it should work on 64-bit environment. We need to compile the
other parts, update the packaging scripts, create an archive for
Ubuntu 64-bit, then test it to ensure everything works.

It's the old add age: the first one is the hardest, and we've got the
first one (Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit) working, so now it's time to expand.

Can't give you a timeline yet for when it's going to be done. We're
having a meeting shortly with all the developers that have commit
access to the SVN to plan out the next iteration. We'll post the
minutes from that meeting on-line so you'll see if we can get support
for 64-bit packages in the next iteration.

Fred,
Do we need to remove old VM player and upload new version before upgrading to 0.63??

Thanks for a great program!

Hi Lori,

No, that's not necessary. Just upgrade your VM, or alternatively download a new one from google code and start it up.

Fred,
Do you recommend that we upgrade to VM Workstation for the 0.63 version of BBB??

This reminded me of something I did a while back.  I was able to get BBB VM Image to run flawlessly with Virtual Box.  You just need to convert the vmware disk image and make a config around that converted image and VBox boots it up without trouble.

Would instructions on how to do this, or just a tarball with the conf and converted image disk be something anyone would be interested in.  The whole process takes 15 minutes after you download it.  It also gives you more access to things that VMPlayer does not.

You can also boot it up in qemu with the KVM extensions in the kernel.

Let me know I can scrounge up the docs and throw it in the wiki if desired/wanted.

Hi Lori,

Your fine with VMWare player. We run BigBlueButton with both VMWare
Player and VMWare desktop and they both seem to be good, and I think
they are both using the same backend.

Hi Doug,

If you want to contribute how to get BigBlueButton VM to run within
Virtual Box, we'd be happy to integrate it in to the docs on your
behalf.

Thanks!,... Fred

This is a critical one ....

And secondly, cannot get desktop sharing after input
svn co http://svn.bigbluebutton.org/project-bbb/trunk/deskshare/ .
I get "Checked out revision 70

I do not have a deskshare Icon as the video shows.

Thanks for your help,
Lori

Hi Lori,

As you are a non-profit group in distance education, we *really* want
to make sure you can use BigBlueButton and everything works well.

I'm assuming you are using either the BigBlueButton or install from
packages, and have upgraded from 0.62 to 0.63. Can you check that
everything is installed. If you type

dpkg -l | grep bbb

You should see the following packages:

firstuser@bbb-vm-20100121:~$ dpkg -l | grep bbb
ii bbb-apps
0.63.0ubuntu52 BigBlueButton applications for
Red5
ii bbb-apps-deskshare
0.62.0ubuntu7 BigBlueButton deskshare module for
Red5
ii bbb-apps-sip
0.63.0ubuntu27 BigBlueButton SIP module for Red5
ii bbb-apps-video
0.63.0ubuntu2 BigBlueButton video module for
Red5
ii bbb-client
0.63.0ubuntu261 BigBlueButton Flash client
ii bbb-common
0.63.0ubuntu121 BigBlueButton common files
ii bbb-config
0.62.0ubuntu17 BigBlueButton group package
ii bbb-openoffice-headless
0.63.0ubuntu10 BigBlueButton wrapper for
OpenOffice
ii bbb-voice-conference
0.63.0ubuntu41 BigBlueButton voice conference
files
ii bbb-web
0.63.0ubuntu152 BigBlueButton web interface
ii bigbluebutton
0.62.0ubuntu6 Open Source Web Conferencing
System (bbb)

If you don't see bbb-openoffice-headless, for example, the slide
conversion won't work. To make sure everything is upgraded, please
type

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Next, let's make sure everything is running. Can you type

bbb-conf --check

You should see something like this:

firstuser@bbb-vm-20100121:~$ bbb-conf --check
Current Configuration:

/var/www/bigbluebutton/client/conf/config.xml (bbb-client)
IP for tunnel check: demo.bigbluebutton.org
IP for rtmp (red5): demo.bigbluebutton.org
host for bbb-web interface: demo.bigbluebutton.org

/etc/nginx/sites-available/bigbluebutton (configuration file nginx)
server_name: demo.bigbluebutton.org
port: 80
client document root: /var/www/bigbluebutton

/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/WEB-INF/classes/
bigbluebutton.properties (bbb-web)
host: demo.bigbluebutton.org

/var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/demo/bbb_api_conf.jsp (API
demos)
host: demo.bigbluebutton.org

/etc/asterisk/bbb_extensions.conf (asterisk)
conference module: konference

Host IP does not match BigBlueButton: 134.117.226.253 !=
demo.bigbluebutton.org

You can ignore the "Host IP does not match message" ... it's more a
warning that bbb-conf couldn't match the hostname against the IP
address. If you get any other warning messages, please post them
here.

If you've done the above and there are no warnings, you should be able
to do slide conversions. If not, try the following command

bbb-conf --clean

This will do a clean restart of BigBlueButton. Try uploading slides
again.

As for the desktop sharing, you shouldn't need to checkout the
source. There is a package for desktop sharing. There's a subtle
upgrade bug that sometimes the desktop sharing will be installed, but
disabled. You can get around this bug by doing the following

sudo apt-get remove bbb-apps-deskshare
sudo apt-get install bbb-apps-deskshare

Lori, let us know if the above resolves your two problems.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Lori,

If you could give us (temporary) access, we could login to the
computer and get everything working for you.

Please e-mail me directly. I'll post a follow-up to the group letting
everyone know what we did to resolve the problem.
