Update on BBB Development

I'm working on modifying this amazing project we know as BBB to match the needs of a non-profit organization that tutors kids from around the US (currently, at least). Attached is a screenshot of my progress on the front-end and I hope to contribute back to BBB shortly after I get a few bugs ironed out! :D btw the text in the image is typed directly into the whiteboard using the text tool.

Hi Ajay,

Very cool!  

As we covered yesterday the BigBlueButton community, we're headed in the same direction for improving the whiteboard.   Richard has been working on updates that are similar, so if your willing to work together, we'll definitely be able to add more capabilities to the whiteboard this summer.

We have a bit more work on our end as we're also adding playback of all the presentation events in HTML5.   So each new control added to the whiteboard requires a corresponding event for playback, and an extension of the HTML5 playback.html to support drawing of the event.  

We're very interested in working together.  To contribute to the BigBlueButton project, see
  

I think this is going to be the Summer of Whiteboard for BigBlueButton.

As Fred is saying, I am also currently working on the whiteboard. If
you have it committed in git, I can take a look
and integrate into what I am doing to minimize duplication of work.
And looks like you are further ahead of where I'm at now.

Hi Fred,

I'm thrilled by your offer and I'd think it'd be awesome to work together. I will prepare my code with the necessary comments and create some instructions for testing, and will contribute in a few days' time. In addition, as I brought up in the community call yesterday, the organization I'm helping integrate BBB with needs a system for playback of the recordings with whiteboard events, and I can help with that as well if any is needed. Also, if I need to get into contact with you or someone else in the group of core developers, what would be the preferred method of contact?

Hi Richard,

I've been following your development on the text tool on GitHub as well and would love to offer a hand if any is needed. Regarding my source, it's currently on GitHub as well and as mentioned in my reply to Fred's comment, I will add some more comments to make it more understandable as there are some significant changes to the whiteboard architecture that I felt necessary when designing the text tool.

Hi Ajay,

The best way to keep in contact is this mailing list.  All the core developers actively participate in this list (we were all on the community call yesterday). 

We're working now on making available the playback with whiteboard events in master.  We'll post here as soon as it's pushed so you can have a closer look and try it yourself.

It doesn't have to be complete and perfect for you to share. Chances
are there will be more
changes we need to do to pull it into BigBlueButton.

I like the way you allow the user to enter the text and choose the
font size, etc. Would be great to
incorporate that as I will need to implement the same thing.

The sooner the better. But whenever you are ready.

I have finished commenting everything but there is still something I want to take care of before I post the source, and it has to do with the text toolbar. However, I should be able to get the source to you by sometime tomorrow (US/Canada PDT).

Unfortunately, I was not able to get the source up today. My (valid) excuse is that my printer's scanner failed on me and I wasn't able to turn in the contributor's agreement to Fred. I plan on getting that fixed first thing tomorrow morning (it's late night here) and will post the source shortly after.

Thanks Ajay.

I have merged it into a branch and will be working with it to
implement changes we need for the whiteboard. It's still not fully
functional yet as I made changes to the server side too.

I think what you have done is good. Looking forward to make it stable
and fix bugs. One I've noticed is it's not handling the
late joiners properly with the text not showing up. And there's also a
few bugs in the UI. But I think those can be easily fixed.

Will work with you on this.

Hi Richard,

I'm glad my work will be of help. As listed in my post, I am currently aware of the following bugs:
  • for some reason, grid and text are not added to the whiteboards of new clients that join. Very peculiar, as the debugging output shows that they were received by the clients, and I add them in the same way shapes are added to the whiteboards of new clients, but still no text/grid are visible. 
  • Didn't work on scaling/positioning of text much. When text is received by other clients, they use the absolute coordinates of the presenter's window and where they were added there. Also, when zooming in on text, the change in its position seems to not be relative to the other shapes.
  • Moving around with grid mode on when zoomed in is a bit glitchy.
  •  When typing into the TextField while using the Text Tool, listeners that listen for the whiteboard shortcuts (such as the 'W' key for toggling the whiteboard toolbar) are also fired and make it annoying to type. 
I am working on getting them fixed in conjunction with you, so if I have any updates, I'll be sure to let you know. Also, I wasn't aware of any UI bugs (my fault for non-extensive testing), would you be able to tell me about some of those so that I can work on getting those fixed in my copy as well?

Hi Fu,

We've been working on adding the whiteboard a text tool, line, and triangle tool in BigblueButton 0.81, so of the underlying code came from Ajay's work.  We're still working on getting 0.81 to beta; we'll post an announcement to this mailing list when it's ready for others to try out.  For an update on our progress towards 0.81, see
