Adult

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM9/29/2015
with Denise Gold, Archaeologist and Historian

In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea lies the beautiful island of Sicily, a crossroad for many civilizations. The island’s favored appearance and central location attracted many peoples to its shores. Discoveries of cave drawings show that prehistoric people lived there. During the 700’s B.C. the Greeks colonized the eastern part of the island, and later, Carthaginians founded trade settlements in the western area. The Romans conquered Sicily in the 200’s B.C. and made it their prime province, as Sicily provided grain for the entire Roman Empire. Among other settlers were the Phoenicians, the Jews, Saracens, Normans, Spaniards, Austrians and more. Sicily is also known as the Island of Myths, because it was the supposed home of many of the ancient Greek gods. Homer’s Odysseus (Ulysses) and his men were trapped there in the cave of the one-eyed Cyclops. Denise Gold will regale you with other exciting mythological tales—stories of Aphrodite, Persephone, Hades and others and will take you to many ancient and mysterious places. Among highlight visits will be a stop at the Greek and Roman city of Syracuse and to where papyrus grows. Also see the impressive Valley of the Greek Temples at Agrigento and the magnificent Roman villa at Piazza Armerina with its brilliant mosaics of amazing animals and bikini-clad young ladies. Thrilling and informative narration enlivened by gorgeous illustrations.

Movies

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM9/30/2015
Starring: Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris
  Rated: PG; 140 minutes

Apollo 13 was supposed to be an uneventful space flight, but it became NASA’s worst nightmare when they heard these famous words uttered, “Houston, we have a problem.” Stranded 205,000 miles from Earth in a damaged spacecraft, astronauts Jim Lovell (Hanks), Fred Haise (Paxton), and Jack Swigert (Bacon), endure a critical struggle to survive. The pressure is just as intense at Mission Control, with astronaut Ken Mattingly (Sinise), flight director Gene Kranz (Harris), and a brave ground crew racing against the clock to bring them home safely. Using state-of-the-art special effects, and clever filmmaking techniques, director Ron Howard builds nail-biting tension, while maintaining authenticity of the facts. The outcome is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and a blockbuster hit film.
