I replaced the coax VHF on my old 400 with RG213. The mast was easy however fishing it thru the headliner conduit back to the radio at the nav station was a difficult job
I plan to upgrade the coax. Some people are using LMR400 however it is stiff. Out of interest what did you use.

Fletch-
Yes, you do need to remove the trim. Very easy - 4 screws. Just had my 2003 re-rigged with mast removed. Here are a few things to consider:
1) Replace the coax for the VHF radio - go one size up (less loss) - major improvement. Probably should replace VHF antenna while you are at it also (about $85).
2) Consider adding an LED Tri-Lite.
3) Go to LEDs on steaming and deck lights and on anchor light (if you don't go to tri-lite)
4) Have roller main serviced (if you have one) - bearings lubed and reefing line replaced.
5) Check all halyards and shives at top of mast
6) If you have a roller main and you have the plastic strips on each side of the mast slot, have them removed (fairly big job) - this will open up the slot by 1/8 inch and allow you to go to vertical battens on roller main.
7) Have mast/deck seal checked and redone - leaks, etc.
8) Have a dynema strap installed at base of mast and tied to the hull - this is an offshore safety requirement (for racing) but a good idea in general - prevents mast from coming out of hull in the case of rig failure/knock-down.
9) Check gooseneck and boom vang fittings - I had a few remade out of stainless - pricey but the originals were in bad shape.
Have fun,
Rick

Here is a question for the owners of a 473.
When you pull the mast does one need to remove the wood trim that covers the mast?
If so is it a simple process.
