Have any of the members of the group installed the Seldon or Sparcraft bow sprit kits.   I thought of making one from stainless.   Not being an engineer, I'm afraid to just wing it for fear of damage.   I don't want to just order some heavy wall pipe like schedule 80 and hope it works.  A code 0 kite for me would be about 1440 SF

Jeff,

I have the Selden installed on my B49 TR. Pictures available online at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/beneteau49/page3/
... Near the bottom of the page.
If you're going to fly a Code 0 you'll need a bobstay.

Cheers

Jim,

Thanks for the pic's.    I think going with a manufactured pole is better than me trying to make something then have it fail due to loads I don't know how to calculate.

Quick Splash, B50  2010 hull #2, is new to my wife and I this summer.  We had a Beneteau 45f5 and after about 13 years of successful club racing we were looking for the future retirement cruiser.   Selling Vixen I had to race Quick splash to see what it would do.   As we found, this boat fly's on a beam reach.  In our last October race we saw boat speed at 12 knots!   yee ha    We passed two fleets that were ahead of us and finished first.

I'll be doing the Storm TriSail clubs race down the bay this may.    The Pics of you Vic Maui race look exciting.   There was a 45f5 that was in the race for several years.

Thanks again for Seldon pics.

Jeff

a bow sprit is about gaining separation and increasing the Js....a code 0 sail is a flying sail, one that has a free flying luff other than that is not too different from "drifters"  which had attached luffs... it is a rule bender which allows an oversized jib to be used, by allowing it to be measured as a spinnaker and not affect the handicap by having an over sized jib.     I have not looked at the numbers for the B-50,  adding a small sprit may NOT create much of a gain in either sail area or performance...   Looking only at the quoted sail area of 1440 sq ft,  seems rather small gain over the normal J... makes me think that the cost and effort to add a sprit may not reap the expected dividends.   Adding a code 0 using current tack and increasing the overlap should yield a similar sized sail without any modifications to the boat's ring and hardware.   Run the numbers and check in with your local handicapper about the rules when using a code 0...some areas have restrictions or penalties  for having both std spinnaker and asymmetric spinnaker or code 0

Jim,
I saw your post about the Selden bowsprit. I couldn't find the pic. I am thinking about this for my b 49 to use with my drifter. I mainly want to creat some separation from the head stay. Can you give me any insight as to how this lays out?
