Hi,

I am considering a high-pressure inflatable floor dinghy for occasional use on my Beneteau 31. For anyone that has one of these, are you able to unfold and inflate it on your boat at anchor?

All the instructions talk about finding a large flat surface, which we don’t have much of. I might could fit it on the foredeck, but it would be tight. Can one partially inflate it on board, then finish in the water?

Thanks!

It’s a pain, but I store my Zodiac Cadet deflated in the big starboard locker on my Bene423. The inflator is a bicycle style pump that needs a hard surface. It would be nearly impossible to use it in the water. It does fit on my foredeck, so is easy enough to assemble. If it will fit on your deck fully inflated, I think you would be able to assemble it up there.

Hello Ben,

I had a Zodiac Fastroller 285 with inflatable floor on my previous Beneteau First 285. Was able to inflate on the bow but it was a tight fit.

On the deck ahead of the mast - yes.  It's a Hypalon Avon, 10ft

Difficult to say. Definitely would have to starts on fordeck. If you get enough air in to allow it to float, you could then bring it to the stern and complete the process.

Yes Ben. This is joe Sircely. You can air it up on deck. I had a10 ft one. Did not like the HP inflatable floor. Not good under way. I gave it up for a hard bottom dinghy.

I’m looking at a WM HP275 or a Zodiac Wave 275 Aero. That might fit on my foredeck. I guess I need to do some measurements.

What aspect of your's causes the pain?

Ben.

Ben,

I have a West Marine high pressure V floor. High pressure in the bottom floor is a little misleading it is 11 psi vs 3 psi for the side tanks. Making sure you have 11 psi in the floor makes a world of difference in the performance of the boat.    But getting 11 psi with the standard big piston pump is somewhat difficult after about 8 psi but it can be done. I have made up a smaller bicycle tire pump with a smaller piston to get the pressure to 11 psi more manageable.I don't know what the pressures are on the Zodiac but keeping them at design pressure will help.

Thanks, that’s good information. I understand both models I am looking at come with two-stage foot pumps.

I was thinking about getting a 12V electric inflation pump that can handle up to 13.5 PSI, I think. It lets you select the target pressure and is supposed to automatically stop at that pressure. Unfortunately, it looks like they all come with integrated power cords (with alligator clips) that may be a bit short for reaching my house battery bank from the foredeck or transom. I may need to get creative with an extension cable, or add a convenient but expensive NiMH battery pack designed to integrate with the pump.

We use a domestic vaccum cleaner with the nozzle on the blow side to push the majority of the air into the tubes and the floor (just holding it up against the valve) - when we have 110v avaialable.  We then switch to the low and high pressure pumps for final inflation
