I am thinking seriously of doing a little boat shopping over the next six months.

Here are a few questions for 461 and 473 owners.

Which engjne is quieter the Yanmar or Westerbeeke?

Parts prices Yanmar versus Westerbeeke? My past experience with Westerbeeke was not great for availability and price.

As to performance is the 63 hp enough for a 461 or 473???

my 400 has a Perkins Prima 50 which runs like a champ has very pricey replacement parts which are often hard to come by.

Thanks

Fletch

Yanmar is the superior engine in this marine class.

I have had a 461 and my present boat is a B-49 both came from factory new with Yanmar 75. The best engine ever.
I have a Westerbeke Genet 7.6 on my B-49 it is a piece of junk. I have had to change the engine once after 80 hours of use.
In 16 years that I have had these two Yanmar they never had anything go wrong with them, they start every time with less than a turn of the engine. They both gave me an easy 8 to 9 Knots plenty of power.
Good luck.

Beneteau put the Volvo D2-75 in the 473. A good choice. The advantage of the Volvo is lower RPM for same HP out put as for example the Yanmar.  Volvo also has superior parts availability worldwide.  Take measurements because size may be an issue for a particular application.  But fundamentally all diesels available today are good choices.

63 HP is at the bottom of the acceptable range for the 461 0r 473.

I likewise have had excellent experience with Yanmar and would not consider a Volvo or Westerbeake as an alternative. I hear Volvo parts are highly expensive ...

Hi David,

My 473 has a 76 HP Yanmar,  and its been great.

Plenty of power.

Maintenance parts readily available…

It’s the consensus best choice….and a great boat by the way.

Thanks. I am thinking of moving up to either a 473 or 461 from my 400.

I guess from the comments I don't want to look at a boat with  Westerbeeke just in case I liked it.

A couple years ago I thought the value was in a 473.  Three years later they seem to be the very same price as they were then. 461's are less plentiful however I like the design and from all reports they sail well.

If anybody can comment on the 461 or 473 as to sailing or motoring, I would appreciate it

Time will tell.

If anybody is interested in a very well equipped 400 contact me offline.

David,

I ordered our 2004 B473 with the standard Volvo 55 Hp engine (D2-55) with a three bladed Max prop.  Both have been excellent for over 12 years.  Plenty of power with low fuel consumption.

I have only had to perform maintenance twice beyond the preventative oil, oil filter and fuel filter changes. In 2008 our neighbors boat was struck by lightning and the pulse fried the internal voltage regulator.  I had a local auto alternator shop repair it for less than $50.00.  In 2014 I replaced the raw/saltwater pump when the bearing started to go.  I do not recalled the cost for the new pump but I thought it was reasonable at the time.  I was able to order online with delivery in a couple of days.

Your mileage will vary,  Cheers

Matt

Yanmar because it is global brand and you can find parts easily anywhere in the world with reasonable price. My friend have 473 with 100 Yanmar turbo perfect combination I had Yanmar 75 turbo in my old boat Jeanneau 45 used it 6 years without having any problem only regular maintenance.  My current boat has a Volgswagen marine engine even though very good quite engine very hard to find service points and parts.

Let me tell you about my engine ordeal.
My model year 2003 36.7's  Volvo MD2030 seized back in November due to a bad injector. Volvo no longer makes this engine. The new engine was not available in the US due emissions issues. They offered me a 40 hp replacement but I passed. I ended buying a Yanmar but had to have the mounting grid rebuilt to accommodate the new footprint. Eveything else went faily easy and 5 months later i was up and running. I had tap into my retirement to pay for it... in the long run i think the yanmar will be a better engine but the Volvo was flawless until it wasn't...

No, i had the Volvo dealer in Charleston and the City Boat yard look at it.  They both referred to the engine as "disposable" throw away types. Kinda like money...

David,
She doesn't hobbyhorse but puts her shoulder to the seas. We have the Westerbeke63C and have had excellent service. She will do half of apparent wind speed to about 16 knots and motors at 7.2 with 2000 rpm. My choice not to push for more but it is available. We have a 3 bladed max prop. I can get her to double digits on occasion with 22+ knots of breeze @ 60 degrees apparent. 135% triradial genny and battened furling main also tri- radial

THANKS

she doesn't sound much slower than a 473.

I currently have a 400 which we have sailed for the past 10 years.

Want to move up to a little more sleeping room. Storage and speed. We cruise the Bahamas, mostly the Abacos, from Jan to April.

473 sits very low in the water at the transom like my 400. I don't care for that. Clean transom is more my favorite.

I would think a 461 or 473 two cabin would work well.

I would like to be able to motor close to 8 knots in a light sea with a smooth running drive train.

I’m on my 18th season on my 2 cabin 461 #89 but I have the 75HP YANMAR 4JH2-THE with a 3 blade Max-Prop. I live aboard at the moment so she’s loaded but I still cruise at 8.2kts at 2800RPM. The YANMAR is a very nice engine and I have never had an issue with it. I took a YANMAR diesel course so I service it myself and access to the engine is very easy. Spares are readily available although YANMAR has some sort of distribution war going on so I can’t order parts online from the east coast(I’m in Seattle) and I have to buy in person from the local distributor who always has what I need.

I have the classic mainsail and think she is a good sailor and in anything over 10Kts apparent will easily sail at hull speed which if I recollect is 8.25kts. Top sailing speed on mine was 14.6kts during a 25kt broad reach down the straits of Juan de Fuca under full main and spinnaker during the 2006 Swiftsure Race.

The 473 is a bigger boat I have one a few docks up from me and she seems to dwarf the 461 but it appears they have the same mast and rig. I am also not a fan of the submerged transom of the 473 which just doesn’t look right.

I have always liked the 47.7 which is a similar size and I see a few of those around now at much lower prices than in the past.

Regards

Stewart

I own 473 S/N 108 (2003) with Yanmar 75.  Great engine but it is high RPM (3800 max).  Added a Gori folding prop and hit hull speed at about 2600 RPM when in "overdrive".  Normal pitch would probably give me hull speed at 3000 RPM.  Turbo seems to kick in at about 2500.  I hear Volvo (used on the 423) is a lower RPM and possibly quieter engine but I have heard of some problems at high cost.  I would stick with Yanmar (the 75 is a turbo charged 50).

Boat sails well as long as there is some wind - say 8 kts - given the weight and roller main/genoa.  Handles apparent winds up to about 25 with no rounding up and full sails but I usually consider reefing main around 20-22.

Did Annapolis to Bermuda - 14 knots on broad reach in 20 kts true surfing 10 foot rollers with asym up on the way over.

A bit of pounding when falling off waves on a beat coming home - falling off to a close reach helped.

Many would not consider most Beneteaus true offshore boats but I was happy with the ride and always felt safe.  Some leaking hatches due to a bit of flex...

Don't not look at a 461 just because it has Westerbeast 63! Its been old reliable for me and plenty of power for 461.  In my humble opinion 461 is a great sailor--though no fun beating into waves--and a comfortable cruiser.  Wife and I have been as far south and west as Apalachicola via Dry Tortuga  and north and east to Northeast Harbor, and I've rocked and rolled to Bermuda and on to Maine with long-time sailor crew.

We like our Westerbeke on our 381 too. Very reliable, great access the way Beneteau chose to install it and easy to work on when needed.  Runs smooth and quiet compared to engines (on smaller boats) a 27hp Yanmar on a 37' Jeanneau, a Volvo MD5 on a Kyrie 32 and a 16hp Fetus on that same boat (repower).

Burns about 2/3 gph, we cruise it between 2200 and 3000 rpm depending on conditions and load. We don't use it at idle to charge the batteries.

I have had no issues getting spares by mail order / internet. Hansen marine especially for Westerbeke specific items.

I know it a not the exact question you asked but I wanted to share my experience wit Westerbeke.
