Boom car stuck
Depending upon the age of your boat you may be due for the car upgrade. On my first Beneteau which was a late 90s vintage car was undersized and did not have the delron bearings. It did not adjust well under load. I purchased an upgrade with the balls and the track for loading them and it was like a different boat after that. Well worth the modest cost and aggravation.    The newer car was much more substantial could handle the load better.

When I pulled out my furling main, the sail came out but the car pulling the sail got stuck about 3/4 of way and won't move. Since I have electric winches it seems to be really stuck, won't move for or aft.
Any suggestions?

Bill,

You might want to try disconnecting the outhaul car from the clew. Tie the sail around the boom. Now you have the car free of anything except the boom. That should give you the opportunity to find out what is causing the problem.

The Plastic ball bearing inside the car are bad or broken.

You probably canot get the ball bearing alone. You can get the whole car and the bearings. They are not that expensive.

You can buy a rebuild for the car.
This sounds like the sail is jammed more than an issue with the car.

Bill, I have had the same issue and found that with the kicker tight all kinds of problems happen. Mostly the car traveling ¾ aft and jamming. If you notice the foot of the main is quite a bit higher on the boom at this ¾ point compared to fully aft. This means the force is verticle at this point rather than horizontal along the boom. Further pulling especially with the wench will pull up not out. I have gone to a larger block and gone under the pulley then back to the outhaul aft of the boom. Check the phonic balls in the block for the proper amount and see if some are going flat if it is a Zspar setup. Check also if your topping lift on the boom is too tight as this also can create an issue especially when the kicker is pulling down.
Good Luck, Mike

Hi Bill, Run up to the mast, grab the foot of the sail at the slot and
pull. If the sail comes out easily, it is most likely a car problem. The
car could be jammed, the main-sheet or boom Vang too tight, or I guess the
ball bearing broken. I keep the car and track lubed with Sailkote McLube.
I would release the out-haul line and see if the car moves without pressure.

If the sail does not come out easily when pulled from the foot, check the
in-haul line and furling mechanism screw to see if the line is warn and
jamming at that point. I could be time to replace the line.

Good luck.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the advice. A lot of good info. It is the bearings in the car. I think some are missing and they needed to be lubed. Had to tap with hammer and use some wd40 to get the car to move forward. Now I am lubing with mac lube.
Part of the joys on my boat are 4 electric winches. Part of the problems on my boat are 4 electric winches! When something gets jammed, it really gets jammed.
I need a new car when I get back from trip.
Cheers,

Looking at a purchase of used 423 and need to find a surveyor.

Thanks
Brian W <brian....@gmail.com>: Aug 12 02:12PM -0400

Not sure about a local surveyor in your area, but when you do get the boat
surveyed ask to confirm that a barrier coat has been put on the bottom.
I've heard that some Beneteaus sold new in the NJ area did not have a
barrier coat put on by the dealer and that the resulting blistering can be
bad.

423 is a beautiful boat...good luck

On the 30B3 westerbeke there is a preheat relay (that's probaly good) but
there is also a very small resister wire off the relay that sometimes could
be an issue. It prevented the relay from working on our engine.

The eight amp buzz fuse on the control panel keeps blowing. It is usually
associated with my use of the pre-heat button but not sure. It appears
thisis a common problem with the brand. Is anyone successfully figured this one
out?

The eight amp buzz fuse on the control panel keeps blowing. It is usually associated with my use of the pre-heat button but not sure. It appears thisis a common problem with the brand. Is anyone successfully figured this one out?

It sounds your pre-heat element drawing too much amp. I have Westerbeke and never had a problem with fuse.

Check the pre -heat there are 3 of them one on top of each cylinder.

For those who knew Guy Mariande and had him on your Friend list and maybe even stopped by his place in New Smyrna Beach on the ICW, I noticed he was missing from my friend list last weekend. I knew he wouldn't have unfriended me so I tracked down his wife Judy and found out that he died of cancer back in June. She just got around to closing his Facebook page.

His Beneteau 351 "Island Time" was well equipped and well maintained and is currently on the market, listed with Dave Huff of St. Augustine Yachts.

Judy can be reached at ju...@guym.com<mailto:ju...@guym.com> if you were a friend of Guy and would like to comment or offer condolences.

Good luck.

Thanks for all info.
It is the bearings. Lubed and hammered and got moving. Need to replace the car.
Hope it holds out till I get back home.
Bill

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the advice. A lot of good info. It is the bearings in the car. I think some are missing and they needed to be lubed. Had to tap with hammer and use some wd40 to get the car to move forward. Now I am lubing with mac lube.
Part of the joys on my boat are 4 electric winches. Part of the problems on my boat are 4 electric winches! When something gets jammed, it really gets jammed.
I need a new car when I get back from trip.
Cheers,
Bill

Bill, you can buy the balls at West Marine 20 in a bag and you need at least 2 bags.

just switching out a roller furling main. is more of a problem than the roller furler main. now it is cars up and down the mast track, read (more weight), when the cars die, a lot of the older fellas in the group just don't want to ne on a rolling deck to tame the main. jmho

The Plastic ball bearing inside the car are bad or broken.

You probably canot get the ball bearing alone. You can get the whole car and the bearings. They are not that expensive.

Bill,

You might want to try disconnecting the outhaul car from the clew. Tie the sail around the boom. Now you have the car free of anything except the boom. That should give you the opportunity to find out what is causing the problem.

When I pulled out my furling main, the sail came out but the car pulling the sail got stuck about 3/4 of way and won't move. Since I have electric winches it seems to be really stuck, won't move for or aft.
Any suggestions?
Bill

Bill, I have had the same issue and found that with the kicker tight all kinds of problems happen. Mostly the car traveling ¾ aft and jamming. If you notice the foot of the main is quite a bit higher on the boom at this ¾ point compared to fully aft. This means the force is verticle at this point rather than horizontal along the boom. Further pulling especially with the wench will pull up not out. I have gone to a larger block and gone under the pulley then back to the outhaul aft of the boom. Check the phonic balls in the block for the proper amount and see if some are going flat if it is a Zspar setup. Check also if your topping lift on the boom is too tight as this also can create an issue especially when the kicker is pulling down.Good Luck, MikeSent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Bill Jarvis
