Kanzaki (Yanmar transmission) guru wanted )))

Hi! 

My Kanzaki KBW21 has a tough and irregular clutch. To go in forward or reverse you need to try 2-3 times. When in gear - no slippage, works well. 

boat 2003, gearbox never changed i suppose. The boat just bought. 

I thought it is a cable problem, and disconnected morse cables, but i cannot switch into the gear even by hand. So looks like the problem is in gearbox. 

A question to the experts:  

A) What can it be? A small repair or overhaul? Magic fork? Repairable?

B) if need to replace the gearbox (rebuilding may cost the same money almost), what is the contemporary substitute?

Have you tried draining the gearbox fluid and checking it for metal filings or maybe just changing it period?

No, have not changed any liquids yet. Good idea to start with. Boat is on land now, antifouling.

I suggest you email this gentleman who is the retired head of the Yanmar distribution company for part of Canada.

He loves to help people out. Has a bunch of parts etc and will rebuild your transmission for 300 labour 400 if he does all of the bearings. Remember that is Cdn dollars so discount it by 20 percent. 

He also has some complete new gears.

He will tell you what is up. A wealth of knowledge.
