What cools the drip less seal is a nippel near the drip less seal attached to the shaft tube ,  there should be a small hose branched of your water discharge of your exhaust line that feeds water to this nippel thus cooling and lubricating  your drip less seal.
You need to burp your seal buy squeezing it to brake the air lock.

Thanks for the tip. I will try that but I just had a bottom job last month and I saw them clean some of the thru hulls. I think I could close the thru hull and take off the hose and check out both the shaft end and the hose for blockage. If water comes in when I open the thru hull then that probably is not my problem. Has anyone suggested putting grease on the shaft under the seal?

You need to put grease around the shaft where it comes out of the shaft. Volvo makes a special grease for that.

It is by sight. I plan on closing it and removing it form seal and then opening it to see the waterflow. Here is what the manual says. I am not sure how to grease it thought

Maintenance
The rubber stuffing box offers a
low maintenance solution and yet
offers a long life span when handled
properly. Apply grease every
200 running hours or once a year
and ventilate the seal after launching
the boat for many years faultless
function.

I did burp it several times and took the boat out for a short run, It still squealed but not as bad and this time the shaft was not warm to touch.

The real issue isn't the seal per say.

If it has got hot it may have scored the shaft. That often happens .

One can change the seal without pulling the shaft however to get a good look at the shaft you need the seal off to mic the shaft.

I have heard that some have changed the seal in the water however that sure wouldn't be for me

If you were to the haul the boat it may be wise to pull the shaft out and take a good look at the wear on the shaft. check it for straightness and face the coupler.

Removing the shaft is not a big deal as long as you have a prop puller. maybe another twenty minutes at the most.

Do the cutlass bearing at the same time.

I just did mine. the seal was around 80 dollars and the cutlass bearing was 49 ish .

Just Google

VOLVO PENTA SHAFT SEAL

there are many good reads . cruisers forum has a thread on using a straw to lub it while other like me use a plastic needle  with a plunger used for exopy. worth a dollar or so.

If it got hot with no lub it may be damaged however most change them when they start to drip a little.

if it got hot I would think the shaft is scored. is it dripping?

If it growls I doubt it is the seal. a seal us rubber which doesn't growl it squeals or chirps.

What color is the transmission fluid? if you can get an engine stetascope listen to the transmission and the seal at the dock. Tighten the dock lines and run it in gear. you should hear it I  the ear piece .

Have you checked your transmission and its fluid level. Also keep in mind the shaft should not turn if you are sailing and your engine is off.
Are you hearing this noise with the engine  off and shaft is locked and not turning?

Thanks. I have a bigger problem. I tried to remove the hose running from the thru hull to the cutlass bearing to see if I was getting good water flow and snapped off the brass fitting at the cutlass bearing. The thru hull was closed and I got a steady stream of water from the propeller end of the cutlass bearing so water flow was obviously not my problem.

You may have a bearing on the out put end of your transmission starting to fail ? That may explain the heat in the shaft ,does your transmission have a oil cooling manifold ?
Useually underneath ,correct about the shaft not turning while sailing ,I put mine into reverse, which will make the prop feather ,if you are sailing in neutral it may simply be transmission noise you are hearing while the shaft is spinning
Doesn't look like you have a seal problem ,all you have mentioned sounds normal

I  tried putting her in reverse. That did not stop the shaft from spinning or the noise. I have a mechanic coming today.

Roger that ,then I would suspect gearbox problem ,maybe cone clutch or bearing failure
They are fairly simple ,and about 15min to remove so don't panic,as long as your mechanic is straight up
Good luck mate

is this the tiny (1/4" or less) fitting at the fiberglass tube behind the transmission?

If so - I did the same, snapped mine off when I was trying to change the hose.

I went to a marine store and found a similar sized fitting with a coarse thread where it goes into the fiberglass tube.  I then CAREFULLY drilled out the fiberglass to accept the new fitting - I used a very focussed shop vac to collect as much of the swarf as I could and stopped every couple f seconds to make sure I was not all the way through as I wanted to avoid the drill bit contacting the shaft.  I then used a manual tap to cut a corresponding thread into the fiberglass (again slow with shop vac) and then finally I put the new fitting in and sealed it with either 3M or epoxy (I forget which) for the top 3/4 of the thread only. Had held up for multiple seasons.
