Hi,

My B31 has a Profurl C290 headsail furler. Tonight we noticed that,
after unfurling the sail, the tack shackle was not lined up with the
extrusion bolt groove. On inspection, the two screws where the extrusion
enters the sleeve at the tack shackle (turnbuckle sleeve, maybe?) had
backed partially out. After realigning things, we were able to tighten
the screws. It seems okay now. Fortunately we caught it before it
reached the "can't furl the sail" stage.

Question: Should those screws use loctite? The online installation
manual mentions using the (included) thread lock compound for the set
screws at the joints between extrusion sections, but doesn't explicitly
mention it for these particular screws.

Thanks!

Oh boy!  you touched a nerve!  we have had so much trouble with the screws backing out, i can't tell you enough.  it has been a three year war with some pretty hairy moments where the top unit was stuck part way down and wouldn't go up or down in a blow.  two things we learned: if they back out and keep the sail from dropping, one fix is to go to the top of the mast and undo the shackle that holds the sail to the top furling drum.  the sail slides down and you can access the set screws to tighten them.
second thing is that the Profurl locktite is worthless.  we have religiously applied it on several occasions without success.  before taking off for Hawaii from SF, we went carefully over them again and found ten different screws were loose. we carefully applied the stuff Pro Furl provides. it was still a problem mid ocean a week later when we wanted to get the weight down and off the bow for the spinnaker run.  in Hawaii we took all of them out and used medium LockTite.  i have much more confidence that it will reliably stay set in place now.

Hi Jack,

My problem is at the drum end, not the top swivel. Are the set screws
you mention the ones at the junctions between extrusion sections? Those
are definitely supposed to have threadlock according to the profurl
manual. My problem is at where the extrusion attaches to the sleeve on
top of the drum. The manual does not mention threadlock one way or
another for those.

Red lock tight. The set . screw is a special me with a dowel that goes into the lower foil which has a special hole to hold the foil from sliding down in to the drum.

Thanks!

Which loctite is "normal"?

By "screws on the track", I assume you mean the screws that hold the
aluminum extrusion sections together? I need to check those on mine next
time I've got the sail off. But the screws that I was talking about are
the ones that tie the extrusions to the tack shackle and drum. I guess
they could be best described as the "screws beneath the track" than the
"screws on the track".

Seems like the red loctite might make sense for screws on the track,
since I can't think of a good reason to remove them. I wonder if blue
might be better for the screws beneath the track. I can imagine needing
to take that apart for maintenance or repairs.

A good reason to remove them would be to take the extrusion down in order to replace the forestay.

Why screw around with their questionable stuff when you know real locktite works so well?

Just finished Tahiti to Fiji on a 461 ,we had the forestay furling track let go and drop down through the furling drum ,which meant the top roller came off the track .
Had to go up in the chair drop the halyard feed the roller back onto the track so we could drop the sail ,ten minutes after that got hit with 35 knots and horizontal rain ,lost the grub screws that locate the track in the drum ,managed to temerory fix until Rarotanga

What helped me that one time it jammed half way out (due to a fold in the leach – old sail – badly furled in – my fault) was silicone spray. It made a lot of difference. Spray alongside the slot where the sail is to reduce friction and it will come out a lot more easily. Otherwise as others have said, have someone up the mast and move the sail in and out inch by inch.

Try to roll it in then out and repeat that to help tighen the bulk in the maste... work it a little at time have someone push on the sail at the mast as you crank on the outhaul line.
