I think in the water is the place to do it. The prima 50 has a lift ring on the engine. 

I plan to just support the engine and remove the complete mount and bracket versus lifting the engine 4 or 5 inches.

I read that guy deflated a basketball and placed it under the bell housing and then inflated it. Lifted the engine off the mounts.

I had the same thoughts and in the end ordered OEM mounts from Trans Atlantic Diesel for my Perkins  M50. Being in Australia at the moment, I also paid $100 for “freight and handling”. So yes, $700 for four mounts. L My fear was that I would face doing the job twice if I chose inferior mounts with all the associated grief if the ‘’inferior” mounts failed at a bad time. We often cruise in remote places. Who knows? Maybe I was taken for a ride here…

 

My question is can they be replaced while the boat is in the water? What if only one failed one were to be replaced? Would it cause the engine movements in excess of what the dripless seal can take? Any tips and suggestions are welcome.

It is time replace the engine mounts on our OC400.

 

I believe I have three options:

 

Oem Perkins  150 plus each

RD Marine       100 each

Bushings INC    50 each

 

The price range is substantial however quality  and performance is my number one concern whilst not over spending.

 

RD is imported from England as are the Perkins which explains some cost. OEM is always more and often the best way to go.

 

RD looks close to the OEM style while Bushings Inc are slightly different construction. 

 

Does anyone have any thoughts,suggestions and or experience with OEM versus aftermarket engine mounts?

I would be careful with that plan Fletch. I tried same on a Volvo mount and one of the bracket mounts bolt heads sheared off, requiring full removal of the engine and taking it to a machine shop. They use a lot of thread lock on those bolts.
The mount studs (height adjusters) are threaded into the mount, so with lots of PB Blaster a week ahead of time, you should be able to remove the stud and slide the mount out.
