Cleat Bushings

The mooring cleats uswd on 411 423 73 and 461 seem to often split the teak rail cap.

I am told this is often due to the aluminum spacer which fill the large void in the rail.

I have read the aluminum corroded, as it breaks down the cleat allows the rail to split..not sure why.

Would Delrin spacers machined on a lathe work better? I think as they are under compression Delrin would be strong enough.

Coating the bottom side of the teak and the hole with west epoxy would seal it all to water.

Any thoughts or experience on this?

When I had my 461 I took care of this problem by replacing the aluminum spacer with what it seems to be some sort of very tough plastic material and same exact size as what it is there. I bought them from a hardware store around a couple of  dollar or so each.
I am out of town right now when I get back I will send you a picture. I have a few left, I am happy to send you one if you like.

Since all six of mine were splitting I cut the rail and removed about 6" in front and behind the cleat, cleaned up the fiberglass and that was that.
Congratulations on the new boat btw

Do not want to sound dumb however perhaps somebody can explain why the aluminum spacers cause the wood to split?

Many have suggested switching the spacers to a Delrin type material. Why would this be better?

Thanks

The spacers are in contact with stainless steel. The two dissimilar metals corrode and the aluminum spacer expands, causing the rail to split. A really stupid design.

When I had my 461 these aluminium spacers would deform due to crousion and the cleat support by these spacers would diminish and since the cleats are positioned directly over the teak and there is not much teak around the base of the cleat in begin with hince the crack would start.

Would the best replacement ( correction )  be stainless or a composite material such as delrin? It seems stainless would be best however it would be in contact with the bottom of the cleat which is aluminum.

You probably missed my answer. I used a very tough plastic material spacers never had any problem after that. There are about a couple of dollars and exact size. I have a few left I be happy to give them to you.

When it oxidizes the Aluminum oxide takes up more space just like freezing water expands as it solidifies.

Thanks. I never knew that aluminum would expand that much.

If one was machining Delrin replacements should they be same size as the Beneteau oem bushings or a touch smaller such that a bit of silicone sealant could seal both the lower joint and the sides of the bushing against the teak?

Just a thought

I'm running into this problem as well.  Definitely a bad design that is causing leaks that I suspect wouldn't be leaking otherwise.  You can see the corrosion on the aluminum spacers in the attached picture.  The crack wasn't really visible until the genoa track was removed.  I'm searching for a replacement for the spacers  Anyone know where I can get some.

Delrin is the way to go it does not expand absorb water nylon  does. Delrin is strong 10,000  psi tensile strength
