Hello,

I am new to BEAST and am trying to work through the tutorials. I made it through the BEAUTi portion of the Divergence Dating Tutorial, but I cannot get BEAST to run the output file from BEAUTi. I've tried several different, random seeds and always recover the "Fatal exception: Could not find a proper state to initialise. Perhaps try another seed" error. I am using the MacOSX version 2.4.3.

Start likelihood: -Infinity after 10 initialisation attempts
Fatal exception: Could not find a proper state to initialise. Perhaps try another seed.
d.2ndpos) = NaN (was NaN)  **
P(treeLikelihood.3rdpos) = NaN (was NaN)  **
java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not find a proper state to initialise. Perhaps try another seed.

Fatal exception: Could not find a proper state to initialise. Perhaps try another seed.

BEAST has terminated with an error. Please select QUIT from the menu.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Rachael,

An infinite start likelihood often mean one of the priors is violated. Each of the components of the posterior if printed out, and the one with a value of -Infiinity is the one to look for — perhaps the starting value of a parameter is out of the range of the prior, or there are multiple calibrations that are mutually incompatible. If you cannot find the problem, perhaps you can send the XML so I can investigate what is going wrong.

Cheers,

Remco
