Hi Remco,

I am trying to launch HeatMapMaker in the AppStore, but nothing happens when I click the Launch button. Any thoughts?

Are you using the latest version of the GEO_SPHERE package (currently v1.1.0)?

Hi Remco,

Yes I am using 1.1.0 and the latest version of BEAST. Please note that I cannot launch any application in the AppStore.

For future reference; this problem was caused by Java version 8 not being the default java version.

On OSX, this is fixed by installing the JDK (not JRE) from Oracle, which is available from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

Hi Remco,

I do apologize for the questions here. I can now launch HeatMapMaker, but receive the following error when I run it:

Exception in thread "main" javax.imageio.IIOException: Can't read input file!
at javax.imageio.ImageIO.read(ImageIO.java:1301)
at sphericalGeo.util.HeatMapMaker.run(Unknown Source)
at sphericalGeo.util.HeatMapMaker.main(Unknown Source)

I assume that the map used needs to be georeferenced in some way?

Chris

Hi Chris,

The error message indicates that a file (probably the one for the background map) cannot be opened.
Perhaps you did not have that image file in the place it was expected. Did you specify the file by using the browse button in HeatMapMaker?

Cheers,

Remco

Hi Remco,

Yes I used the browse button to select the file. Are there any requirements for the map file that may be causing the error?

Chris

It must be a bitmap image in one of the recognised bitmap formats: png, jpg, bmp or gif.

Hmmmmm. Would I be able to send you the trees and the map file to take a look?

Hello All,

Can you please tell which tree file I should use to draw the heatmap? I ask, because if I use the annotated one, then I get just background map without dots. If I use the raw trees file then the process takes a lot of computational resources and doesn't finish.

Best,
Hovhannes

Hi Hovhannes,

The HeatMapMaker works best when using the full sample of the posterior instead of the summary tree.

If the sample is too large, you can use LogCombiner to create a subset by taking the full tree set as input and use the “resample” option.

Hope this helps,

Remco

Hi Remco,

Thank you very much! Nice App.

Is there a way to set working directory?

Best,
Hovhannes

Hi Hovhannes,

If you use the GUI, there is currently no way to set the working directory of the app.

If you start it from a terminal (using the applauncher application that comes with BEAST), then it will use the working directory from where you start applauncher — on OS X at least, so perhaps on Windows and Linux as well.

Cheers,

Remco

Hi Remco,

It opens always the Documents directory whether I launch it from GUI or cmd. But it doesn't matter much.

Best,
Hovhannes
