Package to split the screen

to LaTeX Beamer class

Is there a package that will allow one to split the screen in half, either left-right or top-bottom, so that the two halves either

show consecutive slides ([1,2] being followed by [2,3], [3,4] etc); OR

show a fixed slide on one half ([1,2] being followed by [1,3], [1,4] etc)

It is not the exact thing, but you might look at \begin{multicolumn}.
