I am having some difficulty working out how the GSOC site works.

I have registered with the main site and tried to sign up to the mentors mailing list but with no joy.

I don't have permission to ask to join... (eh?)

Am I alone? What lists should I be on?

You should simply connect to the BEAM Community. Then we will assign you as a mentor and Google will automatically subscribe you to the mentor mailing list.
