Setting up DHCP IP for a custom linux on Beaglebone Black

Hi All,

After testing my beaglebone with readily available images, now i have created a custom linux from the source kernal. Now i need to set up an IP to the board over USB but when i'm trying to connect and look at the ifconfig o/p i see only eth0 interface available. 

How to set up that interface and communicate beaglebone over usb as done in debian (Provided by BeagleBone Forum)?

To add to this, i'm communicating using serial cable.
