A different take on the printrbot driven idler extruder (bondtech extruder)

Here's an extruder that is sort of like the Printrbot geared idler extruder that Mr. Green tried out, but people are giving some good reviews:

Is the point that it will print flexible filaments?  What's wrong with the regular extruder?

A regular extruder is more likely to strip or deform the filament.  One of the videos goes over the "why":
