Heard it today on KQED Radio. It repeats twice more this week. A woman has
been researching killers who have been paroled, interviewing them about
their lives, their attempts to get their lives together, etc. I didn't
catch one of the guys, but two of them I heard tell their tales. Both were
incarcerated in San Quentin I believe; one had shot someone in anger, one
had done it as part of a robbery plan that went awry.

It's fascinating radio, and I highly recommend it.

Interesting story here -- how many killers who have been released go on to
kill again? I believe she said that she got statistics from the state about
8,000 killers who had been followed after release. How many went on to kill
again? 8000? 5000? 1000? How about none.

Definitely worth a listen.

The format was different from usual in that there was no interviewer per se.
The moderator introduced the author of a book about 5 inmates who had killed
and had been released. After the inmates told their stories, the moderator
opened the floor for questions from the audience. This question came from
the audience and there was no follow-up (as there seldom is with the CAL
broadcast).

I don't recall where I heard this, but a few years ago somebody associated with City Arts and Lectures was herself interviewed on the radio. A caller asked why there is no archive, and the woman said something like of snotty like "Not everything has to be on the internet." Another caller complained about the Linda Hunt intro, which never changes and is for all intents and purposes a waste of time. The woman being interviewed said how lucky they were to have Linda Hunt.

While the content of the series is often interesting, the show is simply way too pretentious. Probably the only show more pretentious is "Selected Shorts."

There is an archive but it is given to a university, but I forget which one.
A lot of these kinds of broadasts don't allow podcasting or online archives
because the people interviewed don't give permission for it. I'd imagine
that CAL gets its guests free or cheap, and to make the programs available
via the Internet would cost CAL money.

Of course the intro changes; it changes with every broadcast, and when she's
away someone else does the intors.

Sydney Goldstein must be doing something right because they get some
incredible guests I don't hear anywhere else. Also, some of the
interviewers are interesting in themselves, such as Adam Savage from
Mythbusters.

"Appearing before the Court for Violation of Probation
is 40-year-old Gary Burnore. The defendant was
convicted of violation of Sec. 647.6(a) PC (Annoying/
Molesting a Child Under the Age of 18). He is allegedly
in violation for failure to register, failure to make
payments, failure to participate in counseling, and
leaving the state of California without permission.
The defendant takes little responsibility for the
occurring offense, minimizing the part he played,
blaming others, and justifying his behavior as being
appropriate. Likewise, the defendant appears to
view himself as the victim, vocalizing his distress
that he has done everything 'right' and that the
Probation Department is preventing him from moving.
It is his belief that the probation officer is
'harassing' him.

Although the defendant verbalizes his compliance

his words, especially in the light of his recent
absconding from Santa Clara County. In secret,
the defendant moved to another state, fully
realizing he could not move from California
until Interstate Compact had finished their
investigation and the new state accepted his
case. The defendant's behavior can only be
characterized as manipulative and self-serving.
It appears the defendant does not believe he
needs to follow the rules, but rather that he
is a victim of the system and can, therefore,
do as he pleases.

The defendant's attitude, failure to comply,
and the point that he takes only minimal
responsibility for the occurring offense,
suggests that risk for potential victims
may be high."

For instance, Isaiah Sheffer's

The gap between pretentiousness and reality can be yawning. While
generally I have enjoyed at least one story on Selected Shorts, this
one took up an entire show, was mind-numbingly boring, and made me
think Nathan Englander must be somebody's boyfriend. I forget when I
changed the station.
