Sorry if I'm stating the obvious Davy but have you tried the Ayr Advertiser and Ayrshire Post archives or spoken to senior staff in touch with the retired guys, who may remember it? Something on this should be stored in newspaper files at the Carnegie Library (or used to be).

In those days, unlike now, local newspapers did their job properly and, much like the condom advert, if it was going on, it was going in.

If it was built by local government there would be their records of course, and they might have had charity, friendly society or church involment. A newspaper article on the opening of the building would list the names of those attending the ribbon cutting, which would give you a clue to who was involved with the lodging house. Try their records or memories. Any of them might have had to keep the records because of the investigation into the fire.

Fire investigation records might be at the old county level. And what about the fire department itself ?  The building would have to have had a regular fire inspection and proof of fire insurance registered with the municipality or fire department.
The fire department records should give you the insurer's address and the name of the architect's office who built it. All should have some records of the fire investigation and settlement of claims with the insurer.

I have tried Ayrshire Post archives but they don't seem to go back that far so I am
searching the Glasgow Herald, a slow process as I don't know the year it happened. Thanks Davy

One would think that any newspaper from the 60's would be on microfilm with some sort of indexing. Maybe the paper had another name at that time? That could be why you can't find an archived version funder the Ayrshire Post, 1960's. They may say founded 19xx, but not mention they changed their name or ownership several times.

An archivist at Carnegie should be able to tell you the names of all newspapers that were in existence at the time and area you are searching. There might  have been a small local Ayr paper that came and went over that time, that no one even remembers, that would be quicker than going through the Glasgow Herald.  Did the fire department have its own county or west of scotland magazine or newspaper ? Small newsletters  and magazines were very popular in the 60's in England I know, put out by every level of government or factory or company, though they were mainly focused on the "product" and the staff outings ! Terri

The Ayr Advertiser and the Ayrshire Post were (and still are) the local papers at the material time and back copies/microfiche of both are (or were) kept at the Carnegie Library in Ayr. Many dailies/evenings e.g. Daily Record, Daily Express, Daily Mail, Glasgow Herald, The Bulletin, Evening Citizen, Evening Times also had a presence in Ayr then, but that's a needle in a haystack.

South Ayrshire Councillor Ann Galbraith (my old editor) was around at the time and if she didn't personally cover the incident you mention, she should remember it or someone who would know. Look her up or get her via the council, tel. 0300 123 0900. If the lodging house was an Ayr Burgh property or licenced by the town, South Ayrshire may also be able to help.

Good luck

Very interesting. Didn't know there were multiple fatalities. If you ask about, you're sure to find something if the incident was as reported. It would have been in the dailies and on TV and radio.

A friend of mine mentioned it as he and a friend when they were wee boys went into it after it was closed
and although he knew that someone died in the fire, that was all he knew about it and we tried to look for information but
so far we have not found anything. It seems that the gates or doors used to be locked at 10pm to stop people coming in and that was the reason
they could not escape the fire and about 6 or 7 men died.  Davy

Hi everyone,

Have you tried visiting 'The Mitchell library', Glasgow, and the Index to the files of 'The Glasgow Herald' ?  These should be available on Floor 3 of 'The Mitchell library'.  I think there are in small red-bound paper volumes the last time I checked.  that may point you in the correct direction.

cheers

G'Day I have been reading with interest the Q&A on the "model'
Can you please advise me of the address of The Model in question as in
talking to my old Aunt who said my Grandfather was a manager of ''The
model'' about 1920+- she said the address where the office and the
family residence was at that time 48 Hope street Bellshill in
Glasgow. The establishment was used by men who had left the military
forces and had nowhere to live untill they got settled.
Can anyone assist or do I need to ask more questions of my Aunt
Regards To all

This model was at York street in Ayr. A fire broke out after a Primus stove toppled over, six men died in the fire, one was taken to hospital after jumping 20 feet onto a tarpaulin held by firemen and members of the public. Davy

Hi,i am sure the model was burt down in about `1972/3,the reason i remember is i was an apprentice butcher for Jack Gilmours in George Street and we used to deliver the butcher meat to the model.I am also sure it was supposed to be arson and don't quote me but i think someone or more than one person died due to the fire.Hope that helps in some way.
