Hey all,

We celebrated Petrov Day last year, but I let it sneak up on me this year (it's the 26th, the Monday after next, but we might want to do something on the 25th, the Sunday beforehand, instead). Do we want to try to hold an event for it / is there someone who wants to host?

(For context, Stanislav Petrov was the Soviet officer on duty when the nuclear early warning system triggered; he guessed that it was a malfunction instead of an attack and so did not pass the message further up the chain; it's considered one of the near misses of the cold war and celebrated as a person heroically acting to not escalate a conflict.)

Here's what the celebration looked like in NY in 2014, for example; last year, I think we just did a potluck plus readings.

Warmth,
Matt

I'm interested. Can't host, though.

I could probably host on Sunday for up to 8 people. Monday evening is possible, but it would have to be after 8:30pm. I also don't have a candle holder like the one laid out in the instructions, but I could get one. Anyone else able to host?

Also, I'll note that if we get more than 8 people interested, this is the sort of thing that probably ought to split into two groups anyway. So I'll recommend Bryan should host.

(I'll be in Seattle this weekend, visiting family, so I won't be around on Sunday.)

I'm also interested.

In looking more closely at the instructions, the most my table can seat is 6, including me. Just a heads up.

Thanks Pradip! In that case, I can give transport to people coming from Hyde Park.

Thanks, Pradip. I won't need a ride. Biking to Pradip's is okay.

Let me know if there's anything else we need.

It sounds like we're still below capacity, so I'll come. I'll cook some black beans. I'm inclined to make them non-vegetarian, but if somebody has a killer vegetarian black bean recipe, I'd like to try it out.

I forgot about this for the past few days, so I didn't prepare anything substantial to bring, but I also had a late lunch so am not very hungry. I'll bring some peanuts and wine from the pantry. :)
