Here's the latest additions to the WA Facepalm Files - photos taken
over the Christmas/New Year period.

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/DSC_1052.jpg
Blair Street, Bunbury - have a look at the distance plates on the two
signs

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/DSC_1064.jpg
Upper Esplanade, Bunbury - what is this I don't even!
(in addition to the obvious error, none of the signs at this junction
mention TD260 which goes along Ocean Drive)

Old sign, sans facepalm:
http://expressway.paulrands.com/gallery/roads/wa/numbered/stateroutes/sr5/01_fremantletoperth/images/200907_24_eastperth_heirissonisland_swanriver_gteasternhwy_nh94_nr1.jpg
New sign, now with added pretty colours! http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_1257.jpg
Causeway approaching Gt Eastern Hwy at Victoria Park

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_1289.jpg
Manning Road near Leach Highway, Bentley. The trailblazer assembly,
dating from 1986, shows how its done. But somehow, someone got it
very, very wrong.

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_1612.jpg
I normally whinge about direction signs being hidden behind other
signs (or lamp posts, power poles, trees, awnings etc) but this time
they have, instead of mounting the trailblazer on the power pole,
stuck it in front of the bicycle direction signs. Not sure how anyone
could possibly think that was right!
King William St at Guildford Rd, Bayswater

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_1792.jpg
Which way does bicycle route NE14 go?
Guildford Road at Wilson Street, Bassendean
(I don't normally pay much attention to bicycle direction signs but
this one caught my eye)

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2813.jpg
Lymon Rd/Kwinana Fwy near Mandurah. 'Mandurah' is not a road name and
SR19 should be shown straight ahead as this is the start of
Manjoogoordap Drive. I also don't really like the way they have shown
u going the wrong way around the roundabout at the bottom but am not
sure if it is technically incorrect or not. It's done in a few places

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2951.jpg
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2954.jpg
Midway between Mandurah and Bunbury are these beauties (cough cough)
at the junction with Forestry Road. Also note the 'Perth-Bunbury Hwy'
name plates - this is just about the only place I've ever seen that on
a name plate rather than Old Coast Road. 'Perth-Bunbury Highway' is
MRWA's administrative name for NR1 between Bunbury and Stock Rd/Leach
Hwy junction.

The brand new Australind Bypass/Grand Entrance junction near
Australind
Beautifully designed sign, it really looks good doesn't it? The only
problem is that there's actually two lanes on the carriageway but the
sign shows one. Also, the Collie turnoff is about 200m after this
junction and there's no warning to get in the right lane. A
diagrammatic staggered T-junction AD sign would be much more useful!

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_8240.jpg
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_9484.jpg
These two brand new signs appeared in December. Apparently Wanneroo
Road is now SR56... (both previous signs correctly had SR60 on them)

Ye olde sign was a facepalm:
http://expressway.paulrands.com/gallery/roads/wa/numbered/stateroutes/sr60/02_wannerootolancelin/northbound/images/200811_02_yanchep_breakwaterdr.jpg
Its replacement is also a facepalm! http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_8540.jpg
Indian Ocean Drive northbound at Breakwater Drive near Two Rocks. SR60
should, of course, be shown straight ahead

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_9352.jpg
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_9354.jpg
Two northbound signs on Kwinana Fwy between Mandurah and Baldivis -
both should show SR22 for Mundijong Road

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_9412.jpg
A bit further north on Kwinana Fwy, at South Street, this sign
includes NR1 for Leach Highway but not for Canning Highway...
The NR1/SR2 duplex is, generally speaking, pretty badly signed with
half the relevant signs omitting the NR1 shield. Ironic considering
that NR1 existed on this section of the freeway before SR2 even
existed...

http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_9450.jpg
Lord St, northbound at Morley Drive, Eden Hill. SR76 goes left, so
they got that bit right, but it also goes straight ahead! Fail. On the
Morley Drive approach to this junction there's no sign whatsoever...

Not sure if I posted these next two before or not but these appeared
in November:

Exhibit A: GEH Bypass at Stirling Crescent, Hazelmere
Old sign - correct http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_0307.jpg
New sign - facepalm http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2734.jpg

Exhibit B: Stirling Highway at Canning Highway, East Fremantle
Old sign - correct http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_2970.jpg
New sign - facepalm http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_3302.jpg

And finally, probably the most frustrating of all. In December, the
City of Wanneroo opened an extension of Ocean Reef Road from Prestige
Parade to Gnangara Road at Alexander Drive (see here: http://g.co/maps/3a5jx).
As part of the project, Madeley Street (now Mirrabooka Ave) was
extended north to meet the new Ocean Reef Road at a 4-way signalised
junction with Sydney Road (north). Gnangara Road (east) now feeds
directly into Ocean Reef Road and Gnangara Road (west) now terminates
at Mirrabooka Ave.

So what's the problem? Well, they have just introduced a dog-leg into
the route of SR83 but not installed a single route marker. None. No
direction signs. No trailblazers. Only this sign:
http://www.ozroads.com.au/misc/facepalm/IMG_9523.jpg for westbound
traffic. Nothing at all for eastbound traffic. This is despite large
direction signs at the junction of Wanneroo Road and Gnangara Road
pointing towards Ellenbrook and Upper Swan, e.g.
http://www.ozroads.com.au/WA/routenumbering/state/60/020.jpg

Sigh...

Of course, what should happen is that SR84 is extended east along
Ocean Reef Road and then replacing SR83 on Gnangara Road (east). SR83,
if it is retained east of Wanneroo Road at all, terminates at Ocean
Reef Road/Mirrabooka Ave/Sydney Road. Gnangara Road-Ocean Reef Road is
now the dominant flow and clearly the higher order route.

Anyway, here's a couple of nice photos of the new work. Which is done
quite well I must say.

Enjoy!

I should also add to this comment - "LEFT LANES" is wrong because (a)
you can only turn left from the left lane and (b) there's only two
general traffic lanes on the bridge!

Sad to see so many mistakes.

The Symmons St AD with the weird T shield has been there for years, was there when I moved to Bunbury. I never bothered getting a photo of it.

The same goes for the 50m / 100m panels also in Bunbury.

The Perth-Bunbury Highway signs started springing up in 2008, not just on those 2 ID signs you showed. There's a few stand alone blades with it as well.

The good thing about the errors you've shown, most of them can be easily corrected with a cover plate or removal of a sign. Better than some of the ones we've seen from QLD :)

Nothing could ever possibly fix the mess QLD have got themselves into now......

Man, some of those signs are major fails. That trailblazer in front of the bicycle sign made me laugh Smile with tongue out

Although I did notice something; is the text for the road names on that Grand Entrance diagrammatic sign incorrect? Seems rather thin.
