Hi

I was going on the Pacific Highway this morning when I saw this.

Is there any other F3 signs anywhere else?

There is one on Lucinda Ave Wahroonga that has also been missed

Its the obscure signs on minor roads that you are going to see these appear. Not surprised about Lucinda Ave but Pacific Hwy is surprising.

It would be strange if there were F6 signs as well.

B83 could do with plenty of new signs, particularly around Hornsby - there are some pretty ugly coverplate jobs that are also now deteriorating a bit.

Never understood why they kept the ‘F3’ name long after the F routes were discontinued. It’s not like referring to motorways as “M(number)” was a new thing that came around in 2013, the M2, M4 and M5 were called those since inception, at least since the metroads were introduced. F3 always carried the highway 1 route, so it’s weird it was never called the M1 (or even F1 because it makes sense. 3 seems arbitrary since it’s confusing with Metroad 3)

I think internally the RMS called it the F3 until the alpha numeric routes were rolled out, I'm not sure why the public knew it as the F3 (Im not a local to the area) and I don't believe it was ever signed as F3 either.
It was also in the Sydway maps with an F3 route marker from at least edition 2 1996 (I don't have edition 1), until edition 17 2014 when the alphas were then marked in the book.
I also remember when the Hume Mwy was being widened from Narellan Rd or so north bound there was a nation building project sign with 'F5 widening' as the project name.

Well I know there is a Café called F3 Cafe on both sides of the Pacific Mwy

Is there also a reason why RMS signposts most motorways in Sydney as "Motorway" (exceptions include Western Mwy, Hume Mwy and some Toll signs on the M2 Hills Motorway) and motorway tunnels as "Tunnel" (exceptions include the Eastern Distributor, Northconnex and CCT)

It's not really an error, as the freeway was gazetted Freeway No. 3, and probably still is. It's just unusual to see it on a direction sign, but at the time it worked well as most drivers knew the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway as the F3.

Up until the alphanumerics were implemented both the F3 and F6 were named as such on the crossover markers:

At least they don’t signpost every bridge as “BRIDGE” (eg the harbour bridge)

For whatever reason, both the F3 and F6 were very well known amongst the general public and usage of 'F3' was so popular it even started appearing deliberately on direction signs at Wahroonga in the mid-2000s.

Due to the branding decision by the Greiner(?) Government to call the toll roads 'Motorways' as distinct from 'Freeways' (some of which had tolls anyway, e.g. F3 and F6) the F3 and F6 monikers hung around and couldn't really become the 'M1'.

Quite a number of F6 route shields hung around in Wollongong long after F-routes were decommissioned (at least into the mid-late 2000s) but I doubt there are any left now.

but its strange that they just put a coverplate with no M1 on the cross overs.

And when you get to the other end of Rhondda Rd, there is no sign to the F3 (or M1 or MOTORWAY), just “Wakefield” and “Barnsley”.

Genius! *slow clap*

There’s common cases of ‘signs to nowhere’ in the central coast / Newcastle region it’s hilarious. There’s one in Woy Woy that points to The Entrance (via Avoca) but there is no mention of the entrance after

The "F3 Freeway" mentioned on the distance sign at Mt Colah has now been coverplated with "M1 Motorway" (M1 incorrectly in white text) - looking at Google Maps it was sometime in the last 10 months.
