in new e-Mag

Breaking Media News In A Flash

Revealed: Journalists under probe
* STEPHEN MAYNE is master-minding a probe on the career histories of
hundreds of Australian journalists as part of the first issue of his
Internet Sunday magazine, Crikey, to be launched this weekend. He is
tracing journos, some of whom have joined the staff of politicians and
big corporations. Mayne, the former aide to ex-Victorian Premier JEFF
KENNETT and ex-Treasurer ALAN STOCKDALE, shot to high profile late last
year with his jeffed.com site, which registered some 400,000 hits.
Mayne's new e-Mag will focus on politics, media, whistle-blowing and
shareholder information. He has resigned his three-day-a-fortnight job
editing the 'Bitch' column for The Eye, published by ERIC BEECHER'S
Text Media Group. Mayne was formerly 'Rear Window' writer for the
Australian Financial Review.
* Crikey's sister site will be shareowner.com.au, with a subscription
price of $40 per year.
* The names to be listed on Sunday in the first Crikey are revealed at
the foot of today's Media Flash.

Telstra.com expands
* DONALD McDONALD, ABC Chairman, is pushing for the national
broadcaster to provide its online news service by the end of this month
to Telstra.com in a $68 million deal. Telstra is also simultaneously
juggling deals with OzeMail, Fairfax and its CitySearch, and the Seven
Network.

Hinch back at 3AW: 'It is time to come home'
* Broadcaster DERRYN HINCH confirmed on Radio 5AA last night (Sunday)
that he will take over 3AW's Nightline shift from next week, Monday-
Thursday. In an earlier E-Mail to Media Flash, the 'Human Headline'
said: "I have seen no contract from 3AW. Let alone signed one." Hinch
acknowledges that he dined with AW Program Director STEPHEN PRICE and
General Manager GRAHAM MOTT: "I won't lie. I have been talking to AW
about several things. The first was hinchwebradio which I am trying to
take national. I did have dinner at the Bamboo House in Melbourne last
Thusrday night with Price and Mott. Some things were canvassed. It is
true I am coming back to Melbourne to live - but that was
inspired/prompted by the fact that I have just signed on as CEO of an
exciting Internet site called publicdebate.com.au which combines
talkback radio with instant public opinion polls on the Net. I will be
CEO and Website editor. That announcement will be made next week ... I
would love to return to 3AW. In more ways than one it is time to come
home."
* ERNIE SIGLEY, AW's afternoon celeb., told showbiz correspondent PETER
FORD on-air Thursday, that rumors about Hinch taking over the AW
Nightline shift were true. The 8pm-Midnight gig has been hosted by
PHILIP BRADY, whose former on-air partner, BRUCE MANSFIELD, was sacked
by AW in December. Brady told Friday evening Nightline listeners that
AW management would make an announcement early this week, and at the
very least, he would be hosting Sunday's Remember When.

Top 25 Aussie Web Sites

Investigation into Internet hot shots
* JOE LONGO, National Director of Enforcement at the Australian
Securities and Investments Commission, is confirming a six-month
crackdown on the nation's red-hot and high-tech companies. The
surveillance program will target 'market sectors with high trading
volatility'. IAN McILWRAITH of The Age says a focus is company
disclosures, bolstering the Australian Stock Exchange's scrutiny. ASX
spokesman GERVASE GREENE (formerly Canberra Age correspondent) says ASX
and ASIC regularly contact companies behind the scenes, forcing more
info to be released. New legislation is planned to include a $10
million penalty for market misconduct.

The Man From Uncle - Browned Off?
* MATT HANDBURY is nephew of media magnate RUPERT MURDOCH. Mr Handbury
is Executive Chairman of Murdoch Magazines. Mr Murdoch is Executive
Chairman of News Limited, which publishes The Australian. Thursday's Oz
published this Page 2 item: "In the story 'No, not that Murdoch' in the
Media section of today's The Australian there is a reference to an
alleged incident when Mr Handbury was said to have behaved in an unruly
manner while travelling in a car. The Australian has further
investigated this matter since committing the story to print and is now
satisfied there is no substance to the event reported. The Australian
apologises to Mr Handbury for any adverse imputation concerning his
character and reputation that may be caused by the reference."

Breaking News: Internet Newsletter Restrained
* JUDGE SAMMARTINO has issued a restraining order against FLOYD
SCHNEIDER, Publisher of The Truthseeker Internet newsletter, who
allegedly published false statements against ZiaSun, with the view of
driving down its stock value. The Californian judge was asked to
adjudicate on cyber-smearing, a market manipulation method often used

* MAL MEIKLE is a recipient in this year's Australia Day Honors. He is
a former General Manager of the Age Suburban Publications, which became
Syme- then Fairfax- Community Newspapers.

Overseas Desk
* CHRISTOPHER REEVE walking ... was one of the 30-second TV ads in last
week's Super Bowl coverage. "All advertising is basically manipulative,
but I thought this pulled the wrong chains," writes TIM CUPRISIN of The
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. MALLORRE DILL and ELEFTHERIA PARPIS of
AdWeek (US) say that the dot-com advertisers who paid $2 million each
were left behind in the attention-getting stakes. Budweiser beer and
Pepsico's 'Mountain Dew' soda topped the most memorable and most liked
commercials. Only 36% could recall an Internet brand.

Pollie Waffle
* BILL HILL, the Independent candidate for the State seat of Benalla
held by PAT McNAMARA, will be backed by the new Crikey magazine, whose
editor STPEHEN MAYNE secured 7 per cent of the vote for the Burwood

The Local Report
* DAWN CARSON, PA to GRAEME GOODSON at Melbourne's Community News has
a 'help wanted' ad for an Ad Seller for features in the paper's two
editions. WARWICK MORRISON of The Melbourne Times is doing the same,
heavily promoting the fact that parent company APN Media is multi-
national. Meanwhile, across at Metro News run by GLEN ROHAN and NEIL
MURDOCH, the promotional push 'proudly parochial' with their 114,000-
circulation gloss weekly growing in size and distribution. Expect more
discussions between CN and MN in the coming month.
* ALAN FITZPATRICK wants an Ad-Sponsorship Salesperson at 3PBS-FM
community radio station.

Suggestion Box
* NAOMI ROBSON could do worse than replicate the showbiz-anger she
showed Friday night in her interview with Victorian Premier STEVE
BRACKS (Today Tonight - Melbourne Edition, Ch. 7, 6.30pm).

Glass House Dept.
* FRED HILMER'S f2 site had a blooper when their SportsToday e-
Newsletter was sent to Trading Room members: "In this instance, it was
a case of human error that the Live Sport E-Mail was accidently sent to
Trading Room members. There was certainly no breech (sic) in the
privacy of your details or the security of our system. We are taking
steps to ensure that this will never happen again."
* 'CHIEF DINGO' - an Aus.radio contributor - says the phrase 'alleged
boat people' was heard on 3AW news. "What is the allegation? That they
were people or in a boat?" writes CD.
* IAN MACFARLANE, Reserve Bank Governor is ording an investigation into
the premature release of the bank's announcement of a rate rise to
financial markets and some media outlets on Wednesday.

Court Report
* VINCENT O'BRIEN impersonated Herald Sun journalists TERRY McCRANN,
SHANE TEMPLETON and BRUCE MATTHEWS to place massive bets on football
and cricket. Police Prosecutor TOM WILKINSON told Magistrate PETER
MEALY that the sports betting scam netted thousands of dollars. O'Brien
pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to eight months' jail to be served in
the community.

Writers' Block
* JOHN BLAIR (Northern District Times, NSW), assembled a lovely piece
on Sydney's Police Roundsmen, whilst paying tribute to retiring Police
Superintendent BOB POOLE. Characters remembered include BILL 'JENKO'
JENKINS of the Daily Mirror; JOE MORRIS and CED CULBERT of News Ltd;
NOEL 'BUBBA' BAILEY and BILL 'RECKO' ARCHIBALD at Sydney's Sun.
* MICHELLE VEGH is taking applications for a salaried journo for Wheels
magazine.
* RICHARD JONES, Group Editor at Text Custom Media, is assembling a
register of people wanting a Managing Editor's job in Melbourne, plus
Editors and Writers to work from Surry Hills (NSW).

Flash Points
* ERIC BEECHER, Text Media chief, commented this week on the progress
of The Eye: "It obviously was going to be hard and it is hard, and we
expected to lose money for a long time and we won't be disappointed on
that front."

Long Shots
* JANA WENDT is promising that this Wednesday's Dateline (SBS, 8.30pm)
will have a new story about an Australian aid worker drawn into
intelligence gathering in East Timor.

Bottom Line
* Only 2 PER CENT of Australian businesses that are online are
recording a profit from their websites, according to BARRY URQUHART of
Perth-based Marketing Focus.
* 32 CENTS to $5.10 a share is the increase seen by Sausage Software's
STEVE OUTTRIM, who CHRISTOPHER WEBB says sold $25 million woth of stock
late last week.
* $50,000 is tops for the salary package for the Station Manager at
2NBC - run by Narwee Baptist Community Broadcasters, in Canterbury,
Hurstville, Kogarah, Marrickvale and Rockdale (NSW).
* $68,000 is the 'screw' for the new Station Manager at 2SER-FM -
'Sydney's Underground Radio' - with 14 staff and 400 volunteers.
* $41,666 a month from Optus ... and $36,000 a month from Colonial
State Bank ... still finds its way to the ALAN JONES bank account,
reports ANNE DAVIES of the Sydney Morning Herald. She says Radio 2UE
has asked the breakfast shift presenter to terminate or rewrite the
sponsorship deals.

Last Word
* RADIOMAN has lost his Saturday night country music radio gig. He
tells the RemarQ Australian Radio message board that 90 hours of
country music a week has been dropped. Should at least be a C&W song in
it, telling the sad story.

P.S.
* DANIELLE TEUTSCH writes in The Manly Daily about a runion for 150
former employees of the purpose-built Artransa Park TV studios on
Warringah Road. The animation department produced plenty of work for
King Features. Artransa moved to Channel 7's Epping studios in 1969,
with the ABC buying the site in 1974. GEOFF PIKE reflects: "It was the
biggest and best in the whole southern hemisphere, the Fox studios of
its day."
