Thanks to those who replied to my earlier posting. I am now looking
at the JVC 625 VHS VCR for $600 and the Mitsubishi 68cm AV-Stereo TV
for $1000. The Mitsubishi is the same as the $1500 version but
without full stereo and without the swivel base. The TV model no is
CT29GB1. The full stereo model is CT29GL1 I think.
Is Av-Stereo a good deal? I understand that If I run the audio output
from the VCR into the tv, and then the output from the AV stereo on
the TV to my amps AUX inputs I will get stereo sound when the VCR is
on. But if I record on the VCR or turn it off I will only get mono.
Is this correct, if so, its ok as I rarely tape stuff and watch
another channel at the same time - I want stereo mainly for movie
watching.
Another query, which is best - the above scheme for audio:
Signal -> VCR -> TV -> AUX on AMP
or:
Signal --> (VCR off) --> TV -> AUX ON AMP &
\-> VCR ON --> TAPE2 (DCC) ON AMP
I can do this as my AMP have both a DCC input and a TAPE input as
well as AUX, CD, TUNER, and PHONO. I am using the CD and TUNER inputs
at the moment. The manual for the amp (Marantz PM55SE) implies in the
specs that the DCC (TAPE2) TAPE1 and AUX inputs have the same specs
and ranges.
Thanks for any advice, I understand some people do not like JVC, but
my folks have had one for 15 years and it has only failed once as it
was left on with a cover over it. As I only want to spend around
$1500-$1600 saving $100 on the VCR and $200-$300 on the TV for
AV-stereo is well worth the saving for the minor sacrifice in
flexibility. That is of course if AV-Stereo when connected as above
is as good as a full stereo TV..
Comments appreciated,
Dave.

No, so long as you are using the VCR as your TV tuner, it will record
stereo.

I'm not sure if I understand your diagram ... I would propose something
more like:
----->Signal---->VCR---->TV
|
AMP
The signal --> VCR connection is the standard RF aerial cable, the VCR
--> TV connection is the A-V RCA cable (the yellow one), the VCR --> AMP
connection is the A-V audio cables (red and white). You can also have
an RF cable running from the VCR to the TV so you can watch TV without
having the VCR turned on, but you'll only be able to use the TV
speaker(s).
It works best if you get into the habit of always turning the TV, VCR
and stereo on at the same time.
