Titan 1.0 was released one year ago. Happy Birthday, Titan!

Over the past year,

Even without an official Titan release in the past year, community interest in Titan has continued:

I gave a Titan talk earlier this month at Scylla Summit and attended the Cassandra Summit. At both events, I was fortunate to meet with many other developers who were interested in contributing to Titan as an open project with open governance.

We've seen people mistakenly describing Titan as "Apache Titan". We've seen folks on mailing lists asking if taking Titan to Apache would be a possibility. Titan is a missing piece at the ASF in its big data graph architecture. If you use Titan already, you know the list: Apache TinkerPop, Apache Cassandra, Apache HBase (and Apache Zookeeper), Apache Lucene, Apache Solr, Apache Spark, Apache Giraph, and Apache Hadoop.

Many thanks go to Matthias and Dan for Titan, a boon to the open source graph community. Now, this community needs to move Titan forward. If you are interested in contributing to Titan and taking an incubation proposal to Apache, please respond to this thread.

There's cake for everybody. Grab a fork.

Hi everyone,

We're very excited to see Titan being pushed forward for Apache Incubation. Over the past year, MindmapsDB has also emerged as an open-source semantic graph database built with Titan. There needs to be a leading open-source graph database in the industry, as well as the reference implementation for Apache Tinkerpop. So needless to say, our team and MindmapsDB are fully supporting and will contribute to Titan's development.

Cheers,

Haikal

Hi All,

I would be very happy to help with Titan becoming Apache incubated. Myself and my colleagues have been using Titan for almost a year in developing our own Semantic Graph Database https://mindmaps.io/ . I have also taken a personal liking to it and would love to see its continued success and development. The open source graph community needs a Titan :)

Thanks to Jason for putting this idea forward.

Regard,

Filipe

Happy Birthday Titan!

Very excited to see Titan entering the Apache fold. With all the progress and interest that has built up since 1.0, the incubator boost is set to cement Titan's place among the pantheon of go-to graph computing options. Thanks to the Aurelius and TinkerPop teams, and the Titan community for bringing Titan into its own (especially Jason for getting the incubation process rolling)  - looking forward to the next evolution!

While I probably don't have a sufficient developer skill set to contribute code, I can definitely help with the process and usage from an end user perspective. This is a missing feature to the ASF stack and I support it 100%.

Hello All,

I just saw https://s2graph.apache.org/ and I am wondering where Titan (after moving to Apache ) would stand in the overall ecosystem/scheme of things.  Pardon my ignorance but the question I have is "Is Titan already approved for Apache Incubation status or we are in the process of getting the approval ? " S2Graph seems to be an Apache project already and am not sure about the Tinkerpop integration / Companies using S2Graph etc.

A proposal has been submitted to the Apache Incubator. You can find details on this discussion thread: https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/a0fb590f0ea2d29ffcbbe6f6f1cdd025a511551ce8460f57c4eee897@%3Cgeneral.incubator.apache.org%3E

Please feel free to express your feedback.

You can read more about the incubation process here. http://incubator.apache.org/incubation/Process_Description.html

TL;DR proposal first, then a discussion on the mailing list, then a vote to accept into the incubator. The whole process takes a week or two.

The proposal mentions S2Graph which has been incubating since last year. As far as I'm aware, the S2Graph community is smaller, and they are still trying to push out their first incubation release. S2Graph is written in Scala. It is well adopted at Kakao, where the project originated, across different services.

S2Graph does not implement the TinkerPop APIs and Gremlin. I met with them at Apachecon earlier this year and had a good chat with them trying to convince them to do so.
https://issues.apache.org/jira/plugins/servlet/mobile#issue/S2GRAPH-72

There is some overlap between Titan and S2Graph in that they are both property graph database systems, but there are other examples of Apache projects with similar capabilities. Cassandra and HBase come to mind as BigTable-inspired database systems.

Apache is all about building community over code, and that's what I hope folks on this thread are excited about doing for Titan (to be renamed).

Looks like DataStax has responded: https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/e4f2c1403bfb4fe75fce9bd6f3182b9a95b9830ad9893944bac01ed9@%3Cgeneral.incubator.apache.org%3E

Quote:
Hello - my name is Jason Anderson with the DataStax legal group. On behalf of DataStax, I wanted to clarify any potential confusion regarding the DataStax position on Titan. As several posts here have explained, DataStax owns the copyright and trademark rights to Titan. DataStax does not approve of and objects to the proposed forking of Titan into Olympian or any other ASF project. DataStax is evaluating the path forward for the Titan project and considering the various go-forward licensing options. Titan may or may not stay ASL 2.0 licensed as there may be potentially broader benefits to the community with GPL or A-GPL. At this time, we do not have a timetable on these decisions but will provide more details to the community when possible. Jason

So it would seem that DataStax is hostile to the idea. Thats a shame. Given that development has effectively stopped 8 months ago (?), the last pull request merge was 3 months ago and they are hostile to moving the code to a community driven project, we may need to start looking somewhere else.

are they hinting at the nasty dual license thing that oracle does with mysql?

Taking Titan to the ASF Incubation was certainly the preferred option, but is not the only option. We are still working on the next steps for the project and will come back with a new proposal for the community to review soon.
