I often hear the argument that "we've been using text for ages so why stop now" when I talk about structured editing in a mixed group, but I don't buy the premise. Whenever I see a page from an old enough scientific paper it almost always is filled with diagrams, sketches, equations etc. Pure text seems to be a relatively recent invention, probably coinciding with the typewriter or maybe printing press. We were willing to give up the expressiveness of mixed notations when presented with the power of a typewriter. Now that our "typewriters" are powerful enough now to go back to the old way we've forgotten how to do it.
