Tonight at 7:30pm we will hold our weekly evening of microcontroller
exploration, otherwise known as Microcontroller Monday.

Microcontroller Monday is open to everyone! Come and work on your
electronics project, learn to solder, or just hang out.

Tonight I'll be bringing by a prototype of the Geiger kit I'm working on
for CCC. Bring your Thoriated lantern mantles.

If any of this sounds interesting, consider stopping by tonight.

I plan to be at the space from 7:30 to around 10PM, but that doesn't
mean people can't start hacking earlier or stay later.

If anyone has some OLD smoke detectors you might be able to scavenge
some americium for another radiation source...

Americium is primarily an alpha-emitter. The tubes I have are
beta/gamma detectors. If anyone has an LND-712 or some other kind of
alpha detector we could try hooking it up to my circuit, the voltages
are similar.

I've got an old school Geiger counter that seems to be operational but I haven't had a source to test it with. I'll try to bring it by tonight so I can see if it actually works!

Is it a yellow USGS survey meter?  Those are well documented.

I don't know if it's a USGS meter, but it is yellow. I found it at a used office supply store and cleaned it up some. With a fresh battery in it, it indicates that the battery is full and it can be calibrated to 0. That's about all I've been able to test. My smoke detectors are too new (my wife sure looked at me funny when I was testing that).

Danny,

Will you be at the meeting tonight? I would like to kick some ideas
around with you regarding the router.

Hm, I guess it's not a Geiger Couner it's a Civil Defense high-range ion chamber instrument. Sounds like the range is probably way too high to be of any fun.

Americium smoke detectors were never phased out.  AFAIK they're still common items.

Radioactive thorium gas mantles were partially phased out.  Well, Coleman stopped using thorium and went for a yttrium composition ("yttrium"... isn't that a fun name for an element?) , not because of any law though.  Consumer liability might have been part of it but the big concern was risk in manufacturing.

And that was true for the Undark radium paint too- as as an alpha emitter, AFAIK there's no way that radiation would penetrate a glass watch face.

But the decay of the primary element is not the only decay.  Americium-241 releases an alpha, yes- but the products undergo another 13 decays before creating a nonradioactive element.  FIVE of those decays produce beta.   But, the first product after americium-241 is a 2.14e6 year half-life, so that effectively blocks the chain.

Radium has 2 beta decay steps before a long half-life kicks in (there's a 22.3 yr half life layover at Pb-210).  So, you might detect beta radiation through a watch face.  But it's hard to find radium-paint watches nowadays.  I remember my dad had one.  In the 60's, they switched to promethium-147, but that eventually phased out too.

The glow of radium watches won't be very strong anymore, but it's got nothing to do with the radium decaying, the half-life is over 200 years.  The glow is scintillation of zinc sulfide phosphor powder, but the ZnS crystals are damaged by the alpha impacts in the process, gradually consuming its capability to glow but not the radiation.

Yeah. We might wanna figure out transport issues. Unless you wanna
commit to cuts on-site (I fear hasty cutting), these are 16 ft lengths.
Even my van cannot hold 16ft, although I can take out a rear window and
protrude it like 3-4 ft.

CDN is in Pflugerville. The stock guy who knows the 8020 stuff is off
today and tomorrow though.

I was just hoping to finish fleshing out some ideas before self
commuting to various design decisions. So it is a thought experiemnt
mostly.

Then I hope to spend an hour beating on the lathe screw again -- now
that both the truck and I are healthy enough that I am not worried...

Sorry, yellow CD meter, not USGS, that's the one I was thinking of.

There were several models of these:
http://www.radmeters4u.com/

The different models detect different types of radiation, with different sensitivities.

They made a crazy number of them back in the day when everyone was digging fallout shelters.  Almost got one at a garage sale once, but someone snapped it up ahead of me.

If you have exactly what's in the pic, that's a high-range CD-V715.  Sensitive to gamma and high-energy beta.
The manual has a schematic.

Yup, that's exactly what I have. Ebay says it's worth about $50, I got it for $18. There was one more there but it wasn't in as good of condition. It was a while back so I doubt it's still there but I got it at TOPS (used office supply) on Breaker. Unfortunately it's not a V700 which would make it a lot more valuable.

Wish I would have known yesterday that you wanted to play with some of
there -- I bought a case of three of these (different detectors) for my
girlfriend a few months back. She uses them to teach basic stuff in
ecology classes. Anyway I could have brought them back with me... If
it looks like I am going back and forth again I might snag them for a
little while...

I've got the full civil defense kit (sounds like the same thing you got Ebo). 3 detectors I think.  One of the detectors has a test source on the handle.  Also have a bunch of dosometers and a recharger for them.  At one point I had a smoke detector to play with too, but not sure where that is.  I am out of town this week but can bring them in next week if anyone is interested.

One of mine even has a remote sensor for checking out what's going on outside your bomb shelter without going outside.     Makes me want to build a bomb shelter.

I'll be there, attempting to tune my homemade 125khz rfid reader antenna.

I'm using this article for inspiration, but using pwm on an avr to generate the 125khz signal.
