We get the following error here and there when performing API requests, why is cloudfare reporting assembla's servers aren't responding?

Hi Francis,

that's because CloudFlare is our ADN provider, and all the requests going to our API endpoints pass through CF.

Why is Cloudfare reporting that your servers timeout?
We get timeouts many times a per day.

Any updates on this? Speed and stability of assembla's git repositories is more and more of an issue in our R&D, we are getting some pressure from our teams to move away from assembla because of it. We are having performance issues from everywhere we try, be it on our corporate ISP (in Qc, Canada), our data centers (Montreal & Ottawa, Canada) and on Amazon's EC2  US-West (Oregon) - this one is really unstable and US-East (N. Virginia) - which is better than US-West but unstable too. We already moved all our testing infrastructure from US-West to US-East last fall to try to mitigate this, but it is getting worse there too now.

We are getting API timeouts as well as git timeouts, and it is not only harming R&D, but also provisioning of branches and even production deployments.

What can we do to help you diagnose & fix this?

Hi François-Pierre,

I'm sorry for the delay. Our Operations team investigated the reason of the timeouts you're experiencing and they figured out that one of the last timeouts was on creating a new merge request version - it took more than 2 minutes (which is the standard timeout), therefore timed out. The reason was that the MR was containing 261 commits, which is obviously pretty much. There's one more issue which we unfortunately can't handle - CloudFlare doesn't take care of HTTP_ACCEPT header and always sends HTML error pages. We will think about a strategy that will make sure that these requests and actually none of the API requests will time out. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience.
