Strandbeest?

Anyone have any experience making a scratch-built version of Theo Jansen's Strandbeests?

I'd like to take one of the many kits available now and do a larger model for a class project.

I don't think I would go as large as his but something bigger than the mini-kits: http://www.strandbeest.com/shop/index_usa.php

Any ideas, advice or practical knowledge would be helpful.

I 3D printed a pair of legs (small ones) at one point, but never got around to building a larger model. It is still on my to-do list, but has fallen back in queue to a few other projects. All the magic is in the geometry.
