Hello!

I saw David had asked the group a while back about whether anyone has ever tried to embed Google Analytics code into their game...  and I don't think anyone responded affirmatively.  Is there anyone out there who's tried?  And in the absence of gAnalytics, are there any other data points available to track what's happening in our individual games?  We haven't launched anything public yet, but everyone here is wondering how we might be able to evaluate the game once we've done. At the very least, we'd want to see how many people opened our game...  and it would be nice to be able to see how many people completed quests, viewed a particular piece of content, etc.  It would be AMAZING to be able to see things as fine-grained as how many people answered "yes" in second exchange in Conversation X.  Is any of that available?  And, if not, are there any plans to make it so?

Thanks!

Carissa

I, too, would love to know what my students are doing.  I'm pilot-testing my project with students this term and am using a think-aloud protocol.  We set up Reflector on the Macs in the language lab so that everything on their iPad or iPhone goes onto the Mac then we run Camtasia to record the screen and the students.  I can see when they go to a browser (e.g. to look up a word or type notes) plus everything they click and do in ARIS.  I've asked them also to talk out loud to share what they are thinking and doing.

I have a hunch that students are often skipping quickly over the informational plaques to "get back" to the game (its a historical role-play).  Hopefully reviewing the films will allow me to check the times on some of that.

Obviously, having it embedded somehow in the code (sequence of items they visited and length of time) would create enormous research opportunities!

We have been piloting a player log system for over a year now with groups that have resources to perform research on what they find. Let me say that we do have time-stamped player logs for most everything the players do, but need to work up a robust way of sharing that data in such a way that respects security and privacy.

For groups that have an IRB in place, we are willing to share data now, just contact me privately. For everyone else, I’m hoping we have something to make publicly available this summer.

I’ll also say this is likely to be a great topic at the summit this year.

Thought I'd bump this conversation to the top again...  we don't have an IRB (and are not likely to have one anytime soon) but are really interested in some basic analytics (at the very minimum the number of users who played our game). Is there a way to do this without any identifying information? Or contract a third party who could?

For projects with an IRB or that explicitly include us in a research proposal with some funding support, we have full game play log data that we can give you for analysis.

Otherwise, We would be happy to run a few simple reports to help you identify some high level metrics. Email me personally to set something up.
