“The idea of personal digital archives” and software to manage them was very new. At Stanford, he started working in earnest developing Muse—for “Memories Using Email”—in 2009. A few years later, his program caught the attention of digital archivists on campus, who were grappling with more than 150,000 emails in the archive of poet and author Robert Creeley.
